To save you the bother of checking my profile, I am an atheist! I have been 'slagging off ' religion on this forum for some months.
But now I need your help!!
I am pretty well up on the contents of the bible, (old and new testaments) and also many many other religious books!
I am presently 'putting a book together' for a friend, the book will contain "messages" recieved from the 'spirit world'
I have already placed this question on the philosophy page, and had a few replies!
Now have you read or have any reference to these words!
"What use is time"?
"What use is scale"?(as in measurement)
When neither exists outside of man.
If you can help I may stop 'slagging you off' (for a while)!!

"Aionios " Bible translated to eternal , is time with out end it is meaning less to God. But Humans live a limited time, the Spirit lives on.
Measurement or Calculations in Revelations Again talks about the Number of a man. when using the 666 translation. really says The Sum of Mankind. this might be what you mean .

Who says neither time nor scale exists outside of man?

Time definitely exists outside of man. There's a whole universe out there where time keeps chugging away, and did so for about 15 billion years before any man even existed.

Scale/measurement (and I confess I'm not really sure precisely what you mean here) is merely (as I understand what you mean) a way of describing something, be it distance or weight or what-have-you, and this too has existed long before man. Many animals use measurement, although not meters or inches or pounds. Bees can measure distance and direction to a food sources and describe it to other bees in complex "dances." Ants have been shown to be able to count the number of steps to a food source, which is certainly a form of measurement.

So, you're question doesn't really make sense. But as for what use there is for these things... I don't know that they are described in the Bible. But why would they? Time in inescapable. That's like asking what use do we have for spatial dimensions? That's an unanswerable question. And the use we have for scale is obvious. The Bible contains exhortations to use fair scales, but the actual use of scale is common sense. Why would the Bible waste it's time on that?

Says that God can control sun/time

8 Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, "What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the LORD on the third day from now?"
9 Isaiah answered, "This is the LORD's sign to you that the LORD will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?"
10 "It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps," said Hezekiah. "Rather, have it go back ten steps."
11 Then the prophet Isaiah called upon the LORD, and the LORD made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.
2 Kings 20:9-11; (also referred to in Isaiah 38:8)

The meaning of time to God

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
2 Peter 3:8

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years,

Sure I have a couple, gotta look em up and I'll edit. I don't know if this helps:

Psalm 90:4 thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday...

Alma 40:8 time only is measured unto men...

Abraham 3:4 This is the reckoning of the Lords time...

Fac.2 Fig Celestial time signifies one day to a cubit....

See also D&C 64:25...

2 Peter 3:8 But Beloved be not ignorant ofone thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day....

don't stop "slagging" us if you have a good point or question.

just as i dont say "because it's God" or "its in the bible" does not make what i say correct.

i am always eager to hear what logic others use to deny the bible and the existence of God. in that fashion, i increase my spirtual awareness because i have to research the issue, and as an amateur scientist, i have to accept that one day, i may be proven absolutely wrong.

as for time: because we have a limited amount of time on this earth, we tend to use time for everything as the foundation of measuring the energies that we expend to do something.

especially if that something is waiting for someone to finish shopping for shoes ;)

scale again is a portion of the measured time, that we utilize when we are doing something or even nothing.

in the big picture, time has no true meaning once you are on your way to the "eternal" trip. while i do not think that i will be unaware of the passage of time, what does it matter when i have an eternity to be aware of it and i am not suffering.

if for instance God told us sinners that the only way to make it heaven, after we have failed to get in the first time, that we would have to spend a year, or a thousand years in hell, then most certainly time would become and issue.

for instance. place your hand on the outside of the plastic slurpy cup and count to 100. it is uncomfortable if you have ice cold slurpy stuff in the cup.

now place your hand on the hot iron for a count of 5 seconds. in that fashion, time becomes very imortant to you.

Psalms 90:10 The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. 11 Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you? 12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

2 Peter 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

I'm not sure what the use of time or scale is, it's probably in Ecclesiastes but don't worry about things but first seek God and His righteousness and everything else will fall into place. Matthew 6:33 and Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know. Jeremiah 33:3. God Bless.

I'm not familiar with either of those sayings... but I have been studying 'time' for over 40 years. One thing I can say for sure is that there is no compelling reason to think that time 'exists' apart from human consciousness.

Here are a few favorite sayings about 'time':

"Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a bananna." ~ Groucho Marx (I think)

"Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once."

... and finally, my favorite...

"The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to get caught up."

That last one is quite profound, because it operates on two different levels. Considered one way, it is patently nonsensical... yet considered another way, it makes sense in a strangely disturbing fashion.

These things are of no use to God, who perceives all time as one moment and all space as one point. They are simply tools he has given us to let our finite minds function in life. But I'm not aware of any Biblical reference to these concepts. (Doesn't mean there aren't any, just means I don't know.)

I have a question for you. Why do you feel the need to "slag off" religion? If you are an atheist, then why do you care what the ignorant people around you believe?

Best wishes and God bless.

And keep on "slagging" weather you get answers that you like or not! I am a catholic but still feal that you have a right to support your cause as much as we do to defend ours and attack yours. Keep up the good work!

Sophist Protagoras (420-490 BCE) :

"Man is the measure of all things"

Theme of Ancient Greek philosophy and culture. Not particularly a theme of the bible, old or new testaments, where man tends to take second-fiddle to God.
