What made USA great in the past is ironicaly the reason we are not as great now, and sadly, failing fast.
People came here to be free. Free to worship as they chose. Free to prosper and become affluent if they so chose. And freedom from a represive government that did not serve their interests on many criticle levels.
This is a complex question and answer but to be somewhat simplistic about it, what has happened to my way of seeing it, is that US Americans have become so engrossed in making money, to pay for all the stuff we can get and want to have, that we have nearly completely for gotten, that we need to protect and hold dear the land and institutions that allow us to be free to gorge ourselves on "stuff"!
If you don't protect the turf you are going to put all your stuff on when you get it, you will ultimately lose the stuff cuz there's no place to put it, when you get it!
We need to stay balanced and watch for those things that would strip us of our freedoms to get stuff, rights to have a place to put our stuff, and our liberties to come and go to get our stuff and bring it back to where we want to keep it (our stuff).
Americans have become myopic in recent history. We are so busy paying our bills, having our kids, getting better jobs and keeping up with the next door neighbors; we have forgotten to watch for the destructive wildfires of Treasonous Government, Illegal rackets of all kinds (notably illegal immigration), liberalism that has gone beyond reason and become destructive at the expense of the organism that spawned it and perhaps others but those are the ones that concern me most.
We need to get real in this country with who we want to help first (outside of ourselves). Is it refugees? Is it aliens that can do labor for us? Is it the people of the Middle East, is it North Korea? Who and how are we going to handle all this?
If we don't take care to maintain the walls of our homes, the roofs that protect us and the doors that secure our stuff and interests, we are going to be out in the cold, with no stuff, no services and the rest of the preditory world, buzzing around us opportunistically, looking to suck our blood. In my opinion this is at hand NOW.
It will be a slow, rather painful death at the hands of opportunists that do not plan but rather pounce on whatever is closest and most available. To go down/fall prey, to the likes of such "creatures" would be a very sad legacy, for the likes of our founding fathers and the powerful concepts and doctorines that set in motion the legacy of what was here-to-for, a great country.
We need to strengthen our walls; secure our borders. We need to keep our roof tight and in good repair; remodel and strengthen our government and it's enforcements of our protections. And we need to briten the whole stucture with a coat of paint; letting the world know we stand together as one, a proud nation of individuals united under clarity of purpose and strenth of cause, founded and living in law and order, balanced in all things for all fundamental issues and purposes.
We need to do these things above with passion as well as humility and with an arduor that allows for mistakes and promotes the willingness to admit mistakes and make corrections without fear.
It is time to set Iraq towards it's own destiny now that we have done what was set out to be done. For better or worse. If a mistake was made, then admit it or let history take it's course. We can still assist in the weaning process.
Illegal Iimmigration has to be address in clear terms and it cannot pemit amnesty as was given before, without collapsing the point and purpose of having soverign state. We can remove illegals, we can rebuild our education, social and economic institutions and rectify a corrupted government but we must act now and we need to do it in unity and unison.

Freethinkers. While the Pilgrims were a repressive group of people, the generations that followed were open to just about anything. Interest in science and technology grew and America prospered.

I think the repressive religious culture is damaging America. The evangelicals are trying to eliminate science studies and we are mocked for this by other cultures. We are losing ground in the science and technology arena.

We still have freethinkers in our country, but their voice is being drowned out by the new Repressives.

take a look at how U.S. explored the oil from Saudi Arabia... the II World War also was a major factor of enrichment... close friends
like Japan who pretty much financed the 1st Gulf War also were pivotal...
at the cultural level, the mix of cultures approached it to the model of a global village and that's why such modern state is so rich (above all at entertainment level)... but every Empire has its life cycle... the thing is this planetary unilateralism is coming to an end and I do hope US will soon awake to the importance of listening to the elderly...

i don't know what you think is great about it. i love it, but i don't know if you value the same things that i do.

i love that it takes the approach that we are all individuals. we are all responsible for our own happiness and success, and we are given some tools to make those possibilities, regardless of our race or class.

i think we have begun to mistake the trappings of freedom for freedom. our nation has always struggled with money and tax issues, and probably always will. the culture of america now though, seems more focused on money as a measure of success than it did before. money is simply a means to an end, it can be exchanged for goods and services, but it cannot stand in for the ability to sculpt your own destiny.

A sense of "ownership" by each of her citizens made America great.

Something worth dying for.

If you wash your own car and vacuum it out, you are more likely to keep it clean. Your friends will get in and drag dirt and leaves off their shoes, drop chip crumbs, french fries and spill their cola because they didn't feel the sweat on their brow trying to clean it. It's the same things with America. Many of today's Americans don't appreciate what they have because they didn't have to work for it, so they do not feel the need to protect it.

The freedom of religion was what initially made America great. All of the first schools were Christian schools and government was run on Christian principles. In the last 30 years the liberals have tried to veer America off course, and you see the difference.

It never was great. It kinda hurts too. In all of history the US was full of gun crazy, annoyingness. Too much patriotism is bad, it turns into nationalism (PEOPLE THINK IT ME AND PATRIOTISM IT DOES NOT!!!!!) patriotism needs to be done at moderation; Australians do better at that. Australia doesn't have a mass shooting every other day and have super-patriotic jerks, its great. Its more peaceful and doesn't screw around with the world, it stayed (mostly) out the the world wars. My question is, what made australia great?

There are many things that make America great. The men and women who have fought and bled for this country, the history of this great nation, our flag- which surpasses all others. All of these things and more have made our country the most powerful and the most desired country in the world. People are literally killing themselves to be here.

STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER
AMERICAN TIL THE DEATH

What made America great was when people worked for American, and not America working for them. Take responsibility and build your own future. Break out of slavery today!
