In the beginning, the DVD-R format was more compatible with most set top DVD players then the DVD+R format. if you have an older one,say 4 years or more old, go with DVD-R. That's my situation and I have never had a burned DVD not play in my set top player

It really doesn't matter as long as you finalize the disc, it will play in most, if not all set top/stand alone DVD players.

Get DVD-R's that support both ie; "±," just make sure your drive supports this format disc. Go to www.supermediastore.com and have fun. Your physical DVD player will tell you what it's happiest with.
