Fleas make there home in the hair of your pets. However, you can take steps to eliminate them from your home and your cat and keep them from coming back.
First of all, you want to get rid of any fleas living on your cat and if you have a dog or dogs, you want to kill and repel the little buggers on them too, as they tend to quite literally "jump" back and forth between dogs and cats. Purchase a flea and tick medication for your cat from your vet (these can be a bit pricey but they last a long time and work very well) and buy flea and tick shampoo at a pet store. Keep your cat inside (this prevents fleas from other animals from getting on your cat), shampoo him every few months and use the medication as directed. If you have any dogs, you should buy another flea and tick medication for them, but you should be able to use the same shampoo-although dogs should be shampooed more frequently, especially if they come in contact with other animals or other dogs. Its a good idea if you have a dog or dogs, to keep them almost exclusively inside or outside, as dogs tend to pick up a lot of fleas from other animals-even when they are on flea and tick medication. And the last thing you want is your dog repopulating your home and your cat with fleas after you've gone to so much work to eradicate them.
Lastly, maintain a flea free environment for you and your cat (and whatever other pets you may have) by taking care to clean areas of your home that fleas like to make themselves comfortable in while they wait to ambush your pet. It is important that you vaccuum your carpet and rugs often and frequently wash comforters and blankets-especially those containing feathers and animal fibers like wool, as these make for cozy hiding spots for fleas. Also, dry clean or wash coats and jackets frequently, as we humans often pick up any number of things on our day to day excursions that we aren't even aware of-including, yes, fleas. If your friends or family have dogs or cats, get some febreeze (the anti microbial or allergy kind) and spray your own clothing when arriving home after visiting them, and hose down the coats, jackets, and shoes of any guests you have in your home. Febreeze is pet-friendly, so it should not bother your cat.
Well, I hope I could be of some help! Best of luck to you and long live your cat!

Allergic? Or suffering from? First, he needs to be treated every month with Advantage or Frontline or some other prescription from the vet so that he does not attract fleas. Second, if he's an outdoor cat, he needs to become an indoor cat because if this really is an allergy being near the fleas will cause him problems. Finally, if your cat is suffering from fleas you need to treat not just the cat but your entire house or you could get bitten as well.

Use a montly topical flea prevention, like Revolution or Frontline, to keep the fleas from biting the cat. Do not get the over the counter flea prevention, like biospot, or zodiac. They don't work, and cats can have reactions to them. Also, never, never use dog products on cats.
