I am leaving food in the gazeebo down at my pond and the dog is eating the food but if I even walk outside and it sees me it runs away. Don't even know how old it is. Also, I have a lab dog that stays in the house but happened to be outside when the stray dog showed up and my lab chased it, was afraid the stray wouldn't come back but it did the next day. Any suggestions on how I might be able to get close to this dog without it running away?

if you are leaving the food in a gazeebo area, try to stay outside after you feed the dog so that he can get used to your presence. If he is that hungry, he should get used to your presence and eventually he will not be afraid of you. After all, you are the one keeping his belly full. Also, maybe try to have some kind of treat for him that you can hand him, try and let him take it from your hands. Don't force yourself upon him. Just let it come naturally. Start with the lawn chair close to his food tray (you sitting in the lawn chair as he eats - somewhere in close proximity, but not too close). Also, maybe try to get him chew toys so that he knows that you are wanting to be his friend. These are just suggestions. I'm not a professional. Just taking what I know about weary things and giving some advice. good luck. Hope it works for you.

Well, if its a male, you might encourage a female doggie in heat to introduce herself....Seriously, I would just be gently persistent and see what happens as you continue to encourage the stray. The poor thing has probably been abused so is very mistrustful. One thing about dogs tho' is that they ( more than cats?) crave human companionship. You might try putting out some special dog goodies or a meaty bone ( keep your lab away) as a lure. Be careful when the stray gets close, however. And if you do tame the dog, please have him checked by a vet asap. Always leave out plenty of water, but I'm sure you know that. Good luck.

maybe once you see it, you walk outside slowly with some food in your hand, and bend down...surrender to the dog and let it come to you instead of you going to the dog because that just threatens it. Arent you afraid of any disease it might have tho?

You don't NEED to touch the dog. It's not comfortable with you, just leave it be. Sometime after you realize that I bet you the dog will come up to you and scare you (not because it shows its teeth but because you didn't expect it to).

I've tried to get strayes to come to me too and their scared. sometimes if u talk to him and tell him its ok and you wont hurt him it works. through a few treats to him and through them closer to you each time. once it gets comfterble with you let him sniff you then scratch his chin and slowly work your way to his head then you can pet him. if he has a coller check it out if not call the animal control in your town. if it doesnt get comfterble with you I dont know what you can do other than leve it alone and dont feed it anymore and maybe it will find its way home.
I hope it works out for you. good luck.
