SEALs is an acronym--it is short for Sea, Air, Land. They are the top Navy special operations force, and legendary in the world of military history. They handle both ultra-top-secret and black ops logistics and execution.
SEAL training is incredibly brutal, and lasts for about six months. You are only able to apply for SEAL boot camp after you have served in the Navy for a certain number of years, and have an exemplary service record.
Usually, SEALs candidates are chosen from Marine ranks. The soldiers who apply are in top physical and mental condition, but most don't survive the first two weeks of SEAL boot camp. The high "mortality" rate means that only the best of the best of the best are chosen. When a soldier graduates, they can count themselves among the most feared special ops forces in the world.
Surviving the training--and carrying out their assigned missions--is what makes them so badass.

SEALs stands for Sea, Air, and Land, the three terrains which SEALs can operate out of (all of them) they go through 6 months of the hardest military training in the world (BUD/s) which only an average of 20% graduate from, then they go on to SQT (SEAL qualifying training) which is another 5 months. They are experts in military free fall, (jump school), combat scuba, and any maritime operations. Masters of hand 2 hand combat, close quarters combat, and have the best snipers in the world. At BUD/s they go through hell week. 5 days with a grand total of 1:30 minutes of sleep, about 1 MRE meal a day, and countless hours of running, swimming, and PT... they are just bada$$

It is an anacronym of sorts Navy SEAL's train to fight on SEa, Air and Land. They are tougher than the average sailor for the same reason that Army Special Forces or Marine Recon are tougher than the average soldier....more training and training in how to fight.

l- land
s to make it plural
They're the best the navy has to offer and they are extremely well-trained individuals. They are trained to handle situations on the sea, land and air as a special operations unit, which basically means with limited backup and oftentimes no backup when they move into a situation.
