The industrial North could not get anything through Congress because the Southern democrats were in control. In order to get the Southern democrats out of Washington so they, the Northern industrial states, could pass legislation to help the industry and give tax breaks, etc. Slavery was used as an excuse by the Northern industrial states to bring in some of the border states who were free states but was not industrial states. The removal of slavery was a good thing that do come from the Civil War but it was not the reason for the war. 80 % plus soldiers in the Confederate Army did not even own slaves. If the war had never happen slavery would have still been abolish by the south because of new invention like the cotton gin was cheaper than having slaves. Slaves were expensive and unless you were a very large landowner you could not afford slaves. By the way slave trading happened in the Northern States mostly.

Slavery is the obvious reason. It was also believed that Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, had a grand plan of aligning the Confederate states of the South with Mexico and South America, thus creating something of an empire.

Read your history book: Same as today companys needed cheap labor. The south had slaves source of cheap labor.
But lots of people didn't approve, i mean who would?
The North was opening up huge factories and assembly lines and needed cheap labor. So free the slaves and they come up here to get away from intollerable circumstances and have a decent life. We have workers and it looks like we are nice guys to free the slaves. It looked like a win win situation and it was and it worked. For what ever reason even though it wasn't so noble it was a good thing.

The Civil War started because the south wanted to break away from the union. Lincoln actually told the south that they could keep their slaves if they just would stay in the union... they declined that offer to their own perile.

Two reasons.
States Rights, bestowed by the Constitution, which permitted the South to maintain slavery.
Lincoln thought / knew it was wrong and made the decision to abolish it.

The South basically stood on the principle of States Rights. With their agenda, of course.

I think you will agree that majority rule still holds true.

Money. The North needed the South's natural resources. Slavery WAS NOT the reason, although it sure helped (kind of) fix a bad thing.

The south had a way of living and didnt like the Govt taking it away. It wasnt about slavery or anything else. Itwas about states rights to govern themselves

I thought it was because Washington DC was trying to dictate its policy to the southern states and that was sort of ticking them off, so the southerns states succeeded from the union to form their own government. Slavery was a very minor issue in their view.

Money, of course. The south grew cotton and food and sold their products to Europe. The North wanted a piece of the action.
