If you're having surgery, most likely you'll get an IV and have blood drawn which really isn't as bad as a regular shot. Most shots go into muscle which is where the pain (if any) comes from. Blood test needles and IV needles go into a vein not the muscle so won't hurt as bad.
I had surgery a couple of years ago and I was scared of needles until I was hospitalized for a week before surgery. I was poked so many times, I had no time to worry about the pain of a shot and realized it was all in my head.
Good luck.

Very common phobia. I don't enjoy having blood drawn either.

But remember, no one has ever died from have their blood drawn. The worst thing that can happen is a little pricking/pinching pain and it only lasts for a second. It's over before you know it.

The main thing is, remember to breathe when the needle goes in. Some people are so nervous and they hold their breath and when the needle goes in, they can faint from the rush of adrenaline because they're so nervous. If you just calm down and remember to breathe, everything will be okay. I've never fainted.

Trust me, you'll be okay.

I used to have a phobia of shots. Having blood taken really does not hurt. It was having blood taken that actually got me over my phobia of needles. It doesn't hurt, but after a few seconds you feel what can be described as pressure I guess, like someone is pressing down on your arm.

I'd advise when they are about to insert the needle to look away and concentrate on a particular point or object in the room and count back from ten. That gives your brain something else to concentrate on.

I have the same problem.
What helps me, is that I calm down, relax, and act normal. Sometimes I look at what the nurse is doing, or then I look at the paintings on the walls. Then remember, that it's all for your own good!! You should be glad you have the opportunity to get your blood tested.
Once when my sister was freaked out about getting a shot, I started singing a song that made her happy. That also helped her. So try to relax and think about something fun. Or maybe even count to ten. :] Good Luck

I get like this sometimes, especially when they have to take blood. But, I have learned that shots are necessary, and I just have to bite the bullet. I usually ask if they can do it with me lying down. Then I can close my eyes, and try to tune it out the best I can. I know it's hard, but it is truly mind over matter here.

human beings get extremely under pressure out up over pictures. in case you think of roughly it, for sure it extremely is going to pay to be respectful of needles. I supply pictures on a daily basis, or maybe i do no longer care to be on the sharp end myself. I relatively do no longer understand every person accepted who can say they like pictures. yet you recognize, the needle is relatively extremely tiny, and as painful issues flow it extremely is no longer that undesirable. in case you have ever stubbed your toe, gotten a paper decrease, or maybe decrease your self shaving your legs- shoot, those issues can injury worse. i might extremely have a shot than pluck my eyebrows, if the very fact have been advised. Not to worry. They have very fine needles now. Ask for them. Also, ask for a phlebotomist (can't stop to look up the spelling now but sound it out). This is usually a nurse who specializes in drawing blood. He/she will be in and out and you will not know it. Trust me, I know from experience. I have a condition which requires 2-3 blood tests a year and I know who to ask for! I gave my mother insulin every day with fine needles and she didn't even flinch. Good luck.

Try this...sing a song in your head....and the moment they insert the needle- pinch yourself somewhere else...I was told that our brain can only detect one pain at a time...apparently the brain lessens the pain of the shot by doing that....and breathe twice out through mouth and once in through nose. You can do it!!! It's much less painful than giving birth- believe me.

Don't worry about shots, they're not that bad. I have a defense mechanism where I ignore the pain, try it. What you should be afraid of is throat cultures:O

You need to be convinced that this could save your life. The alternative could be something very bad. Once you get through it, you will be fine.
