I haven't spoken to my dad's side of the family since I was 7. They dont call me or even send me a birthday card. I am now 19 and a sophmore in college. My mom and I can't afford it on our own. I think it is time that my dad helps me out. I know that his family is doing VERY well in the financial department. What should I say to them when I call?

when you first call them, don't ask for money, it'll seem like your begging. get to know them first, let them know about your financial situation, and MAYBE they will help out

If anything, I would wonder where your dad had been all this time.

But it really is not a good idea to ask for money at your first meeting since you were a kid.

Before you even consider asking for anything, you both have a lot of catching up to do.

Well first why havent you had contact? second tell them you are trying to better yourself and you need help. If they are still reluctant go through your father or build a relationship with a grandmother or a more elderly less bitter person etc. and causally hit as your relationship gets stronger about your finances. Worst case senario would be that you got close with a relative and you still have debt.

Just tell them that now that you need money you are calling them. That you were doing fine without them, but you know they got cash and you want part of it. COme on if you been neglecting them for 12 years why do it now, yea cause you need money. how low can people drop for money jeese!

best idea is to arrange a meeting, since it could turn out to a full blown shouting match on the phone
i would start with how are you etc.. dont start by asking for money very bad idea..

You shouldn't start off asking for money. Ask to spend some time with him, get to know him, and then work from there.
