We just moved into a new home, it's about 1500sf bigger than our last home, and I have lot's of empty space...I would love to hire someone to come in and figure out what to do with it, I am not good at decorating, I have no idea where things should be put for optimal use of space and I want it to look nice....

Since I'm not sure what market you are in, it would be hard to give you an estimate. But, here is how we work. By the hour, by the project, by the plan or by the item. Some people have a certain budget within which to work for a certain space. Designers will create a plan for that space within that budget. Some clients need an item to complete a room, like a chair, entertainment center, etc and we can shop by the hour with the client or design it and have it made. Some clients are willing to do the work themselves (i.e. painting, shopping), but are looking for a design direction for their space. We can work up a board with color themes, window and floor treatments, upholstery fabric choices, etc.

It may be that you simply need a designer to help you stage what you already have and give you a plan as to what you need. In that case, I suggest you go to an upscale furniture store in your area. Often they will have free decorating services and can assist you with purchasing items to complete your decor. They often will also work with outside designers if your needs are beyond what they can do in house and can give you a referral. I recommend that you set a budget ahead of time, however.

Hope this helps at least to give you an idea of how the fee structures vary and work.

Alot! Best to go to a bookstore and look at it or decorating magazines.
