Usually smaller dogs are more difficult to teach this to. But, yes repition is the best way to go. Try holding a treat in your hand, say "shake", give him a second to try on his own...if he doesn't, then repeat the work "shake" and grab his paw and shake it. That will show him what you want when you say the command. Good luck!

I have a Siberian Huskey (this breed is notorious for having a rather stubborn nature!) and I taught her to shake in just a couple of days. Repetition is the key. I would have her sit, then get her attention and put my hand down by her paw - doesn't matter if it is the left or right paw. I would then (in a rather firm voice) say: "Bayleigh, shake", as I put my hand down by her front paws. If she didn't raise one of her front paws to shake, I would take her right front paw with my right hand and shake it, as I repeated "Bayleigh shake". I didn't use any treats, just repetition. Within a couple of days, she learned to shake. Sometimes she shakes with her right front paw, sometimes she shakes with the left front paw. It doesn't matter to me which paw she uses, as long as she learns the trick. Each time she would successfully do the trick, I would tell her: "Good girl, Bayleigh", that way she got positive reinforcement. Good luck with your dog.

It's actually really easy. Get a favorite treat of his (hotdog, biscuit, etc.) and with him sitting give him the command "shake", pick-up his paw and shake it and then give him the treat. After several repetitions of this he should be doing it with no problem.
