YES! Horrible pain for the first three days. Then I couldn't see to drive or type for two full weeks. During those two weeks I would have stinging sensations in my eyes, but not the constant pain your friend is in now.
Take the pain killer meds. If the doc didn't give your friend painkillers, call and ask for Tylenol 3. Have your friend try to sleep through the pain and only wake to apply eye drops.

Good news, the pain is worth it. I would go through twice the amount of pain to have the vision I have now. It has really changed my life and my attitude. I love being able to see in the shower and not have my glasses fog up when I work out or go into a hot or cold room.

Tell your friend, in just a little while it will be ok. If you have more question or need more help you can contact me through Yahoo Answers.

You are a nice friend for supporting the patient.

Also, when I went for a check up the next day there was a huge tattooed biker dude crying in the office about the pain of PRK. It hurts everybody, but it gets better.

Well, I had PRK 2 years ago. I did both eyes on Thursday and was back at work on Monday. Pain? Well, I had some discomfort on third day, a scratchy feeling of an eyelash stuck in my eye, some tear flow from time to time, but nothing major. Recently, better bandage contact lenses that are used in PRK have helped to reduce discomfort quite a bit.
PRK is much safer procedure and tends to produce better outcomes then LASIK in the long run. I'm 20/12 in both eyes!
I would recommend PRK over LASIK anytime. I suggest going to a good surgeon with most recent equipment including wavefront technology. You don't want to gamble with vision, do you?

i had prk and was in TONS of pain for about 2-3 days. reassure your friend that it goes away. they might also be light sensitive for a while, but that's also normal. the only residual effect now (9 months later) is that my eyes sometimes get stuck shut while i'm sleeping and it hurts to open them if i don't rub them first. this is slowly getting better (prk takes up to a year to heal completely).

prk is great! the pain was awful, but now i'm so glad i went with the option that has virtually no long term problems.
