hi, i have been involved in an car accident today near my home. i was parking at the road side and didnt check my rear mirror to see if there any car behind me. i reverse my car planing to U-turn it to the other lane and just then a slight bump was involved in the car behind me. I got off the car and check the damage which i found it to be almost non-existance. However the owner of the car claim there a bump at his car and now suggest that i pay him 300 $ for it. i told him it not possible as i'm an student and the car i'm driving belong to my family. Legally i'm suppose to pay but is there any other way out of it ? He Suggested a police report but i was against it as i didnt want my parents to know about it. Should i let my parent know and settle this ? or should i pay the 300 bucks and let the matters end ? Or even should we go to a work shop and find out the cost and settle it ?

one thing is a must, cover your butt for legal purposes. get a police report. and definitely contact your parents, they may get upset, but they will get over it. also, contact your insurance company, (which they will want a police report for their own investigative purposes). do not just give him $300, cause what he can do is pocket the money and then he can go to his insurance company and file a fraud claim and be paid for it. It sounds like to me that he is trying to get a nice sum of money out of the deal. and if that is the case which is discovered by your insurance company's investigation. they will bring insurance fraud charges against him.

file a report right away, go to the insurance folks because you are far worse off if you don't. This person may come back to you later on even if you pay it upfront. He sounds like a guy who would want to take advantage of you. Cover all your bases and don't worry about your parents.

However,, depending on where you were, backing up on a roadway is illegal at any time for ANY reason and depending on if you had the right to do a U turn in the first place.

Hope it works out.

If there are damages to the man's car, then you are responsible for paying repairs. Do NOT just hand the man $300, however. He would have to provide you with an estimate from a shop and you can pay the shop directly. If you file the claim with your insurance, the insurance company will deal with it and ensure that everything is done properly. If you don't file with insurance, the responsibility is entirely yours and I would suggest you get a written receipt to prove you paid for the damages to ensure you do not get sued for it in the future.

You a$$hole. Why would you want to 'get out of it?' Have the man take the car to a reputible body shop for an estimate and PAY HIM, or, stop being such a puss and tell your family what happened. You can bet your butt they will be finding out from the other guy's insurance co. if you don't step-up and grow a set.

Tell your parents but if no police report was filed when it happened, tell the guy to get it fixed and send you the bill or file a report yourself but don't just give him 300 dollars because then you have no proof that you did it and he could take the monye file a report and deniey you ever gave him anythink.

Since he's asking you to pay, agree to pay for the repairs, and then YOU take the vehicle to a repair shop of YOUR choice for an estimate. If he won't let you take it, then tell him to meet you there. Do not pay him a penny unless you're sure that the work is going to be completed, and he's not going to pocket the money. If he balks at that, report it to your insurance company, and learn your lesson.

I say call your insurance co. Someone who wants to settle like that is probably being less than honest.

You should have done a police report to protect yourself.
DEFINATELY tell your folks....even if they are upset at you for a little bit, accidents happen and they will get over it.

Whatever you do, don't give the man any money because he can at anytime come back for more money. You need to tell your parents so that they can get the insurance company to pay out any claims.

you don´t need the police. Just report it to your insurance and they will take care of it. they can assess if the 300 bucks requested are right or just overrated.

it's a Non reportable accident
pay the man and get a receipt
You don't need this on your insurance record where you just got your license
