I think it is in the afterward, when we hear about the tapes being made public and it is discussed like it was a terrible thing in the past, and that the society has moved on.

At the end, because you don't know what happened to her but you do know that she escaped far enough away to make the tapes.

I suggest you actually read the book because it is really well written.
