in the mountains east of los angeles, a place called San Gorgonio, the mushrooms grow huge and are safely edible. I mean HUGE. some of them grow two feet across. we used to slice them up and fry them like steaks and they were the most incredible eating ever. we'd go up with huge garbage bags and each bag would weigh more than fifty pounds when we'd filled it with these mushrooms. I've no idea what they're called, but they're great.

If you go to Belarus or Russia, you can go to any forest there and pick up lots of edible mushrooms for free. They can be really good and tasty, if you pick up the right ones.

If you're talking about the silly-kind. You go out to cow pastures(preferably dairy cows) before sun up, and you flip cow dung over. Little or big silly mushrooms grow there.

Don't do it on your own. Get a local guide or something. Many mushrooms are poison, it takes a practiced eye to know.
