I would say that your choice of major should depend to some extent on your SAT scores.
If you scored above 1100 on the SATs, then you probably should major in something a bit more advanced academically than Criminal Justice -- unless you go to a very good school where the cirriculum is particularly challenging. In this case I would recommend computer science, linguistics and literature, psychology, math and physics, or chemistry, depending on your interests. Whatever you would learn in CJ courses you would learn through the academy and on the job anyway, so probably that is a waste of your time and money. If your scores are above 1100, then you probably will advance into a higher-ranking position in just a few years, so I highly recommend that you study a subject that will truly challenge you and help you to develop cognitively.
However, if your SAT scores are under 1100, then you should make the most of a major in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Public Administration, Computer Technology, or Business Administration. In fact, you might look into a two-year (associate's degree) program at a very good community college, which might give you a more practical and relevant education than you might obtain in a bachelor of science program.
Take the time to investigate your interests and your options carefully. Try to figure out what you really want to study, and then do that as well as you can! Jobs come and go, but your cognitive development should climb continuously upward.

Most police forces will hire you without a degree, at least small towns, I don't know about the major metro areas I am sure they would like some college. You can also check your local community college they usually have some law enforcement classes and programs. Criminal justice is good, but they do offer forensic degrees also for the detective bound or crime scene investigator for the curious or wannabe CSI like the shows on tv.

Criminal justice would be a good start along with psychology and problem/dispute resolution classes.A stint in the military/national guard in the military police is a big plus.

my husband went to the acedemy. you need to know laws, self dicipline, defense, tactics, and you HAVE to be fit. he had to run 4 miles a day, plus PT (physical training) and he took an aweful lot of tests. you have to get along with your partners and show that if you need help or if they need help, either of you will be there to help. tip: never show that you dont like someone in your class, they will try their best to boot you out for the fear of maybe you wouldnt give them aid if they needed it. but my husband never went to college. he just signed up, passed the first few tests to be approved of the PT and mental assignments. plus they give you a psycological test. if you dont pass that psycological test, you cannot pass, and they dont give a second try. so good luck!
