I think its a good idea. With a family of five it might be hard to join the Navy though. They have limits as to how many dependents you can have when joining.
Good Luck either way.

Are you saying you come from a family of 5, as in 4 other brothers/sisters, or that you have your own family of 5 sons/daughters?
If you have that many dependents, I do believe that the Navy will not accept you for enlistment. I know when I joined in 1996, they questioned me about my dependents and I was told that if you have too many, you cannot enlist.
If not, I would say join. The United States Navy is the best military force in the world. It is the only US Armed Force that can guarantee you a specific job. The Marine Corps can guarantee you a field, i.e. Aviation, Infantry, etc. but they cannot guarantee you a specific job. The Army and the Air Force both, from what friends have told me when they joined, do not give you an option, they assign you a job.
Joining the Navy was probably one of the smartest moves of my life. I am an Aviation Electronics Technician, currently working on learning calibrations of test equipment. I have been all over Europe and the Middle East and am getting ready to move to Japan.
Its a great career, lots of opportunity. I recommend it.

Coming from a military background I say go for it. You have to really want to join though and realize that the possibility you will go over to Iraq is huge. The military can help you with a lot of things. My sister in law had all of her school paid for. When she got out of the navy she had a masters degree and was able to find a job quickly. You get to see new places that you probably would never have the chance of seeing. My brother met his wife in the navy.

I would recommend against it. Yes the Canadian forces is a steady job with benefits, but if you are Navy, you won't be home much and won't get to see you family. Not to mention, the money isn't very good either. I was in the forces so i kno of what I speak. I think you would be better off getting into a trade. You can make pretty good money and won't be away as much. Plus having a trade you can make money on the side on weekends.

My dad was in the Army for 28 years, my cousin is training right now... the military can be a very rewarding experience. Have you attended college yet, do you plan to attend through the military, or are you looking for the military to be your career?
I think the military is a great choice as long as you are doing it for the right reasons. Make sure you do your research...if you want to get an education, make sure they offer what you really want. Make sure the navy is what you really want (sure you don't wanna join the Army instead? ;)
Good luck in your future and I hope the military life works out for you :)

I think it could be a great experience for you and your family. After serving in the military I did a lot of growing up and found a greater respect for myself and my country that I never knew I could have. The military is also a great place to learn a trade that will help you find work in the civilian work place. They offer large sums of money for collage after your service is up. Or if you decide to remain in the service you can retire after 20 years of service. In your case with 5 children. I could see many more benefits. All your children and wife will be covered with full medical care for as long as you serve. Good luck and have fun if you decide to join.

You have too many dependants to join any branch of the military. You may only enlist if you have a spouse and one child. Waivers are considered for a second and third child, but 4? No way. Juniro enlisted pay is not designed to keep a large family fed, clothed and housed.
Keep it in your pants.

21 and you already have 5 dependents?
OK get a vasectomy first
unfortunately the military will base your entry level depending on your test scores to your needed income for your family size and if it is not within the standards of living you will not be accepted anyways!
now if you were already in the navy and then got 5 dependents then that is different!
Good luck and seriously get a vasectomy! they are a lot cheaper than another kid

My dear friend, You have noble thoughts, thinking of joining our military, but you have already started your life in a different direction. Your children need you more than your country right now. You will be gone from them too much. It is not worth the sacrifice that your family will make.
