what mentioned above is true but pseudo ephedrine is not withdrawn from the markets and still GSK produced it,both have advantages and disadvantages Sudafed can be taken orally, doesn't cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa) but can elevate blood pressure, insomnia, increased heart rate,etc..while phenylephrine if taken orally doesn't have the previously mentioned side effects but its weaker than Sudafed,by the way the most popular nasal decongestant are xylometazoline and oxymetazoline.my advice to you to adhere to you doctor insructions.

First, I think you refer to Phenylephedrine

Pseudoephedrine is a stimulant that slows or ameliorates the scretions of the secretory glands of the body. Hence it is quite effective against nasal serections but it also affects sweat glands so it can be dangerous in some cases if used frequently, long term or during heavy work or excercise, you must drink alot and urinate frequently while using pseudoephedrine or you will dehydrate and possibly suffer uninary tract or renal (kidney) affects with long term use if you do not "hyper-hydrate" while using pseudoephedrine.

That is not why you don't it as frequently as it's "phenyline" sister.

Methamphetamine or crystal meth is most easily made by processing pseudoephedrine resulting in many companies are moving toward toward a phenylated version of ephedrine to make it harder for people to make meth from store bought products. It is chemically much more complex to strip away the phenyl groups to make meth.

Most studies have shown both are equally effective in decreasing nasal sinus congestion and nasal cold symptoms . The same cautionary advisories however apply to phenylephedrine as well.

Pseudoephedrine works much better than Phenylephrine. Phenylephrine does not dry up secretions like Pseudophedrine does. Also Phenylephrine will increase heart rate as well in some people just like Pseudophedrine. I actually had ventricular Bigeminy from Phenylephrine and not from Pseudophed. Weird, I know. Everyone responds differently to medicine so be cautious when taking any type of cold medicine. I would prefer to not take any cold medicine and just stay home from work and let it take its course. Drink plenty of fluids and take my whole food vitamins and probiotics. Eat healthy!

The reason you don't see pseudoephedrine (sudafed) anymore is that it is an ingredient in crystal meth. People who manufacture meth were buying up huge amount of sudafed.

So now you and me and anyone else with sinus problems has to find another drug. (Actually, you can still get sudafed if that works for you, you just have to show ID and ask for it)

Phenylephrine is Neo-Synephrine. You can spray it up your nose or take it in pill form.

Personally, I think sudafed is a better, more effective drug, so that is what we use at my house.
