I have a pine armoir (sp) that I would like to re-finish, I want it to be dark like cherry. If I stripped it and used a cherry finish would it look dark or would I be better off using a dark paint?

"Cordovan" is a very dark cherry stain... Yes, you can stain pine, or any type of wood, for that matter.... you can even use some unusual colors, like a blue, or green, lol.

Just head down to your local hardware, building supply, or paint store, to get some samples... I would also buy a piece or two of pine, to test on....

Adding multiple coats of stain, will also help darken it a bit more. Just allow the proper drying time between the coats. Then finish it off with a good protective finish. Polyurethane is a good finish coat, and you can get it in a 'Satin' or 'High Gloss' finish. For something like a dark cherry, I would prefer the high gloss myself, but that's just me. Try out several combinations on your test board...once you've got the look you want... go for it. :)

Have Fun!

Yes, you can do that. Here are the instructions

http://forum.doityourself.com/archive/index.php/f-35-p-4.html

See tip 836 If you are sure the piece is already stained,

"Traditionally you would have to strip the piece in order to get a new stain to work, but technology moves on.

Check out the newer gel-type stains. They adhere better and don't need to be absorbed into the wood. A 'traditional' oil base pigmented stain will NOT work. You will need to sand the finish (220 grit) in order for the stain (and finish to follow) to have something to adhere to, but it should work.

You need to give the stain plenty of time to dry completely - at least a couple of days. The stain and the poly have the same solvent. If the stain isn't completely dry you'll start dragging the stain around when you apply the finish - a real mess."

If it is pine and you are going dark you don't even need to strip it just sand it a bit then put the stain on. The stain won't be the same color that they are advertising it to be so my recommendation would be to find a hidden area on the armoir like the back, underside, drawer where it is currently stained sand it a put some of the red stain on it see if you like that color if not do another small test area till you get the color you like.

Yes you can stain pine with a cherry stain.
Cherry stain is the color tint...much like paint colors.
I do recommend applying a coat of "sanding sealer" (Home Depot) before you apply stain to pine.
Stain tends to blotch on pine.
