labs because they're patient with small kids, and very protective. border collies too, plus they're easy to train. Make sure you stay away from the smaller breeds such as poodles, some terriers, etc., they're not tolerant of little ones. good luck!

You should really research Breeds of Dogs more.
My family has 2 dogs, a Beagle and a Cockerspaniel. I have a 7 month old son and both dogs are really good with him. Our Beagle is a little more "high strung" shes only a year and a half old, our cockerspaniel is 7 years old and so laid back and cuddley.
If you are adopting a dog, an older already trained dog who belonged to a family with children is probably best. It is HARD WORK training a dog to be good with children. Its hard work housebreaking them too. The one thing you don't need is a dog/puppy who is going to turn your house into a toilet. There are some breeds that you should Veto definately that have bad reputations (which arnt entirely fair i believe all dogs behave accordingto how they areraised) but if you are adopting an older already trained dog stay away from breeds such as dobermans, pitbulls, german shepherds etc. There are just too many horror storys about children being attacked. Any dog can attack a child but if its a poodle the nip wont hurt as much as a doberman (whos jaws LOCK when they bite so im told)

There are a *lot* of breeds that can be wonderful with children. Way too many to list here. Even some small dogs don't mind being pulled on and pinched by children. Go check out some breeds that interest you, and read very carefully. The AKC is a good place to start, along with a lot of other good dog sites also having good breed information. If you choose to go with a breeder, you can see the parents and ask questions about temperament. If you go to a shelter, they will tell you which dogs have been with kids, and which ones should *never* be with them.
Whatever you choose to do, make sure you remember that it is *always* to be judged on a dog-by-dog basis. There are exceptions to every breed stereotype, and you might just as well end up with a kid-biting Lab or a baby-loving Rottie. Just examples, but I hope you see my point. Every dog is an individual, and always take extreme caution introducing any dog to your children.
I have four dogs, and three children, ages 2, 7, and 13. All four of my dogs absolutely *love* my children. They used to argue over who would get to lay next to them when they were infants. They lay perfectly still and happy when the toddler crawls over them, tugs on their tails, etc. And they are small dogs. The breed was *meant* to be a family companion, and they are very, very good at it. I'm the third generation of my family to have them.
Here's the link to the AKC site. Here, you will find info about breeds, and links to specific breed clubs, where you will find even more info about them... http://www.akc.org
One more vote for http://www.petfinder.com , as well. It is a wonderful site and will help youfind the perfect dog in a shelter or rescue in your area.
With enough research, you will find the perfect dog for your family! Best of luck to you!

I think most dogs are good with children it is how the dog was raised. I have a boxer, a pit and a mix and my two year old climbs all over them when she just learned how to crawl she used to use them to get on and off the couch. The boxer is great because they are supper mellow and relaxed. Alot of other dogs are hyper and like to run around jump up etc. If I were you I would adopt a puppy and not a dog because you don't know how the prior owners treated it or why it is up for adoption. I would just get a puppy and boxers are really mellow as puppies as well. I found that my boxer as a puppy didn't chew as much as other puppies as well. Also my boxer is supper protective of my daughter. When we go camping he stays by her side the whole time and goes to bed with her when she naps. Good luck I know your 2 year old will love whatever you choose.

Puggles and Boglen Terriers are both good. Some rat terriers. Bostons, Pugs, Beagles are good. A dog between 15-25 lb is about the right size. They aren't fragile and not so big as to be overwhelming.

A good breed to get would be a labrador. They're gentle with kids. They also protect the house from intruders better then some other breed of dogs. Labs are also loving animals to their owners and obedient. I think you should get a labrador.

golden retriever or a lab. They are the most laid back dogs ever. Make sure you dont get one as a puppy cause they will chew everything so get one that is a few years old. Dont get a spaniel cause they can be very mean. My grandparents got one and i have never met a meaner dog.

I'd get a smaller breed since the child is so young. Cockers are great w/kids. The best large breed is the G. Retriever.A small pound dog is great too.
