First of all, there is a FOUL taste in my mouth that I just can't get rid of. Is this normal? What can I do about it? Also, I really did not expect them to hurt still today, since it has been 5 days since the surgery. How much longer can I expect them to hurt? Thanks for any advice!

OK did you follow your oral surgeons advice on what to do post op. If not then you might need to go back to your dentist for antibiotic. Here is an overview of the procedure and what to expect after it is over.

the symptoms you are describing sound like dry socket, or even a possible infection, to help alleviate it till you go to the dentist do saltwater gargles.

Check with your doc as soon as you can!

Until then you might try soaking the site with moist tea bags. A dentist told my kid to use tea bags to help with clotting when they had to pull some teeth. The tea bags might improve the taste you have in your mouth. Tooth pain can be very severe and last for quite a while. I had oral surgery last year, and the pain didn't go away completely for about a week. And even then, there were moderate, short bursts of pain in the site for a few months.

Be sure to check with your doc, ASAP.

you probably have what is called "dry sockets". it develops when you lose the blood clot that forms in the socket where the tooth was. when that happens the sides of the bone tissue are exposed, along with the nerve endings, which is where the pain comes from. this is called osteoitis, meaning inflammation of the bone. you need to call the dentist who removed them and he will treat the dry sockets. in the meantime, gently rinse out the socket with a water pik. the operative word here is gently. then apply some eugenol to the socket. this will help the pain and the odor.

A foul taste on the 4th or 5th day after an extraction is very typical of a dry socket. Get thee to your dentist ASAP.

I had all four of mine yanked at once. They had to dislocate my jaw to do it. The foul taste is common so dont worry. I was in pain for about two weeks, but I also had a biopsy done at the same time because something turned up on the x-rays.

the foul taste must be the stitches, cuz i have this weird minty taste in my mouth all the time. swish with warm salt water, eat some painkillers if you still have them. mine just got taken out yesterday and i am so hungry. can you eat real food yet?

check w your dr. mine didn't hurt the next day, but everyone is different! 5 days seems like a long time, esp if you've run out of pain medication
