Think of it like this: The Bible reveals that God is holding out a free gift to anyone who receives it. You don't see it, but the Bible says it's there. Let's say this gift is a white robe and we'll call this robe the righteousness of God. By faith, which means believing what the Bible is saying, you reach out and receive the white robe from the hands of God. Ask and you will receive.
After you receive it God stands smiling at you and waiting for you to put it on. So you put it on. You begin wearing it. It feels good. Whenever God looks at you, he sees the white robe. Whenever you approach God, you are comfortable with Him because you are wearing his special gift. You can communicate freely with Him.
After this, you continue (as long as you live) to have a choice about the robe. Some people take off the robe because they are not having as much fun as they used to because others treat them differently when they are wearing the robe.
Some people lose the robe because they start to believe it doesn't really exist and they are just fooling themselves into believing it does. So it disappears.
Some people not only wear the robe, but they realize they have now become God's representatives to this earth. They continue to believe the Bible and reach out with God's love to help other people because they are so thankful to God for what He gave to them.
You see, belief is the mechanism God uses to pass spiritual gifts from the spiritual side of the universe to our side. Belief (or faith) is not something that earns anything on our behalf, it is simply the only way of receiving something from God. We also keep whatever we have received from God in the same way.
This gift isn't really free, it cost Jesus his life, but we receive it freely by faith. God requires us to have the faith to be found covered by the white robe (God's free gift) before we die or before Jesus returns to the earth.
Will you receive this gift from God today?

Nope. Sorry ... all this stuff about having to believe in Jesus to go to Heaven or be accepted by God has absolutely no root in reality whatsoever. Yes, I may be here because of God. But that does not mean that I must sabotage the ability he gave me to think for myself to believe in what a bunch of religious leaders and a book tell me I should believe. When you have a mind of your own, use it. Don't simply believe what your parents or others have told you about the world.
Jesus was an ordinary person, just like you and I. Of course, he was probably more intune with his spiritual side than we are, but he of course has not been the only man in history to be so.

I believe in God, but Chrstianity? Maybe at some point it was good, and it had a good heart, but now its so full of people who just want to push their views on me and call me a sinner and tell me I'm going to hell that there is NO WAY I want to have ANYTHING to do with them.
Hopefully Jesus will come, take all of them away, and leave the rest of us in peace.

I know.... It amazes me that people refuse to believe that there is something bigger than they are out there that created al things...this world including humans was very obviously created by intelligent design...who else but God...when they think about the ends of the universe and death there is nothingness for those people...what are they even living for...there has to be more...we naturally seek out light in darkness...what does that tell them...it's just a metaphor for seeking God when life gets stormy...and he is there waiting...I used to not believe anything bigger than me existed and I was so wrong...there is so mush more to this life...it is truly incredible...it has changed my life forever... knowing that we go to a place of freedom peace and beauty beyond our comprehension is comforting...how could you not believe in something so wonderful I can't begin to understand...their world is very small...God Bless you

Of course you don't understand....you've been brainwashed. I was like you for the most part of my life, and have come to the realization that all religion is a creation of men to try to explain their existence. I believe we were created by a god, but no man and no man-made books can tell me they have information from god. I hate to break it to you, but all you religious fanatics have been scammed. You are so emotional now because you think you have found the truth that you are unable to realize that you were unintentionally deceived by your cult members who were deceived before you.

No. I believe in the innate goodness of people. Organized religions have been the cause of most of the wars here on earth. Religions also exert too much control over people's lives.

Dear Amishkate,
Good points...
I am a Christian...
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
Cordially,
John
