I have been breastfeeding my 1 month old daughter since birth. I am starting to dry up and have switched to formula. The pain from engorgement is unbarable. Is there something I can do to help the pain or possibly even make this transition go faster? I've heard of cabbage leaves, ice packs & sage tea, but do they really work? People keep telling me to take a pill that dries you up, ever heard of that?

First off, you didn't stop all at once, did you? Stopping cold turkey is very hard on you and baby. It makes you more likely to end up with plugged ducts or mastitis which can be painful. PLEASE don't stop all at once for both your sakes. SLOWLY wean off one feeding at a time over the course or a week or two. This will keep you from being miserably uncomfortable and help baby through the huge transition

You can put cabbage leaves in your bra and that might help dry you up some. Sage tea or peppermint tea also both might help. Ice packs and ibuprofen can help relieve some of the swelling. You can pump or hand express a little to relieve engorgement. Taking a hot shower helps relieve engorgement sometimes too. Taking decongestants can help to dry you up some as well.

To help stop your milk flow it will help if you wear a more constricting bra, something like a sport bra. I would not recommend anything like the hot showers because stimulating your breasts will only cause more milk to produce. if you are really in pain, just hand express out a tiny bit to relieve the pressure, but you do not want to have much come out or your body will think the baby is still nursing.
Take some ibuprofin for the inflammation and hang in there.
The tighter bra will help a lot.

I aksedmy OB when I stopped breastfeeding my son and he told me they just give the birth control pill. I have read that putting cabbage leaves in the fridge and placing one on each breast is supposed to help.

I have used cabbage leaves, they work. A lactation consultant told me that sage will cut down on milk production. I never ate any, so I can't say if it works.
