Supper is generally what I would call it when I'm eating at home, and dinner when you are going out . . . like on a date "Would you like to go out for dinner and a movie sometime?" or " My family has supper together almost every night." Of course, I am from NY and word usage like that might be specific to the region you live in . . .

While I was growing up, my parents always called it supper (they actually still do). Now that I live on my own (I'm 33), I call it dinner. I almost think it might be a generational thing?

I call it supper. I still don't know whether dinner is really lunch or
supper. Since there are better things to learn I really don't care.
