Botulism is an illness caused by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It is an anaerobic bacteria that lives in tight, airless spaces, like in home canned foods and honey. It makes a toxin called botulism toxin that clips SNARE proteins at the neuromuscular junction, so that Acetylcholine cannot be released and the muscle does not work, causing a flaccid paralysis and eventually death by lack of oxygen because the muscles of breathing are paralyzed. The toxin is the most powerful toxin to humans, but ironically we use it a lot in medicine, as it is the active agent in BoTox (Botulism Toxin). BoTox paralyzes the muscles that accentuate wrinkles.

Do you mean botulism? Botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are three main kinds of botulism. Foodborne botulism is caused by eating foods that contain the botulism toxin. Wound botulism is caused by toxin produced from a wound infected with Clostridium botulinum. Infant botulism is caused by consuming the spores of the botulinum bacteria, which then grow in the intestines and release toxin. This is why we do not give honey to children under 2 years of age. All forms of botulism can be fatal and are considered medical emergencies. Foodborne botulism can be especially dangerous because many people can be poisoned by eating a contaminated food.

If you mean botulism it is a bacterial infection. It is most commonly obtained by eating food that wasn't properly canned. Infants can also get the infection by eating honney (so NEVER give honey to infants). The infection can sometimes cause symptoms as severe as complete paralysis, and sometimes death. Certain types of this bacteria have been found usefull to the cosmetic industry. An injection commercially known as Botox uses the toxin of a type of this bacteria to smooth out the face and make the lips and cheeks fuller.

Had it. You don't want it. Bad body response to eating contaminated food. Went to a party and decided to "pick" on foods that had been on the table for a while. Warm day. Wasn't thinking. Diarrhea all night. Tried to stand next day and fainted. Hands and feet went numb. Went to E.R. Was given a shot of potassium and told to drink gatorade. Bottom line: when going out, be sure foods are placed in a pan of ice if they are to be left out for a few hours.
