I'm 23. I'm fit. I've got a decent hybrid bike. I can do eight miles in 25 minutes, but wonder if it's reasonable to think I can do that for a long period of time...

So... more details... My bike is a Jamis Coda '06. I currently commute to work 8 miles each way with a fair amount of ease. I would like to bike from Philadelphia to Cleveland (which is about 480 miles) and wonder how long I should plan on this trip taking me.

If you're doing 8 miles each way to work, daily, then you are in pretty good shape already. The question is, Philly to Cleveland, would you be camping or credit-carding. Roughly figure something in the 50-100 miles per day range, but much depends on whether you're in a hurry or feeling touristy.

At your age, you can easily match my best, which is 200 miles in 18 hours. I don't know what "hybrid" you're riding, but I rode a Cannondale 18-speed road bike, and you could get a Trek if you want, and, with some training maybe, you can match my best, and even go for the 300 mile mark in 24 hours. We cyclists consider "a day" as 24 hours, and we call the 100 mile mark a "century", the 200 mile mark a "double century" and, obviously, the 300 mile mark a "triple century". At your age, with your fitness, some training could get you to the very special mark of "double century" and the very special mark of "triple century". And yes, it can be done. There used to be a bicycle race called the Race Across America, and the qualifying ride was a "triple century" since the race was NON-STOP from the east coast to the west coast, and the next year, back from west to east. You can do it!!! Don't deny yourself that special achievement. You'll LOVE the feeling. God Bless you.

1st, you're actually not likely to maintain a 20mph time-honored for a 1500 excursion. 2nd, in case you don't understand this uncomplicated information (how briskly you experience) i ask your self once you're waiting to do a 1500 mile excursion. I fairly propose which you perform a little longer (50-80 miles) a million day or 2 day rides so which you understand what you're able to do. have you ever ridden 50, 70 or extra miles at one time or in an afternoon? Get a bike computing gadget it provides you with powerful information such as you only asked right here. additionally, in case you haven't any longer been interior the saddle all day - you will possibly have an argument which includes your butt being sore, your ft, legs, hands and neck too. maximum human beings can experience 50+ miles an afternoon in the event that they have been driving on a usual foundation. pro traveling cyclists could suitable one hundred miles an afternoon if pushing it. Are you packing tenting kit, driving easy? the place you going to experience? Terrain makes a extensive distinction on your experience time as does wind. there is down days (no experience days) by way of ailment, harm, mechanical, climate or planned. i'm hoping you notice there plenty extra to scheduling a bike trip of this length than understanding what the time-honored man or woman's velocity is on a bike.

for your trip: would you be toting camping gear with you or carrying a credit card for checking into accommodations? hucking all that gear will significantly effect how far and how fast you can go.
if you work up to it, 100 miles in a day is an attainable goal for most people, but a 400+ mile tour is a different kettle of fish, plan on 60 - 70 miles per day once your able to ride a century as a single day event. you will know that you've been on the bike, but won't be too wiped to ride the next day.

in about 1965 I was about 28 I rode a old Schwinn 10 speed about 90 miles in 8 hours. and then later had the opportunity to ride a Schwinn Paramount in a time trial 10 miles in 22 min. a person who worked for me rode the same ride on his chinnelli track bike in 14 min.
at that time there was a person who rode a century run in about 5 hours in a mountain terrain. a lot depends on the rider condition and desire. most of all have fun doing it.
