Petsmart.com has lots of information on what you need for a new pet, and pet training tips. Also check out yahoo pets, purina's websites, and just google it to see what's out there. There is a TON of good information. I would also suggest picking up a couple of books on puppy training if you are a new pet owner (like puppies for Dummies or some-such). Good luck and congratulations. :)

I have a golden retriver. Hehe.
Take your dog out for long walks at least twice a day. Otherwise when he/she is older, they will develop arthritis, and this is very painful in dogs.
Also, don't choose a no-name brand of food. Pick Iams or something. This will help in the dogs digestion, which basically means it makes it easier for them to poop. So don't forget to pick up after them.
And DO NOT EVER FEED YOUR DOG: Cat food, chocolate, tomatoes, unskinned apples, grapes, apricots, fatty foods - in fact, just take a look at this website. http://mooreshaven.com/pets/dogs/safety/badfoodslist.html
Final rule: Do not ignore your dog. Golden retrievers are very affectionate and loving, and they will eventually not like you any more if you ignore them.
It may sound like a lot of work, but this is one of the best kinds of dogs you can get. Enjoy! *goes off to cuddle own dog*

You just HAVE to register with http://www.dogster.com and record his/her life from the beginning. There are great resources.
The best advice I can give is to socialise the puppy REALLY well and to reward the good and ignore the bad.
