I mean, a VIRGIN......really, before you answer, just sit down and think about that. Stew on it for a moment.

OK, has it sunk in yet? You actually believe that a woman who never experienced sexual intercourse gave birth to a child.

And Bible Answer Man, if you're going to answer this question, please refrain from doing so by quoting scripture. I have a degree in religious studies, so it is really pointless to do so.

that is NOT a very small part, genius. It is the WHOLE picture. if mary wasn't a virgin, then the child is Josephs. If the child is Josephs, then Jesus isn't God. If Jesus isn't God, then Christianity does'nt exist.

You better come a little stronger if you're going to debate me, boy.

Well my friend, although I'm sure you worked hard at said degree in religious studies, you may have missed the class that described the ENTIRE Christian religion. If you had attended such a class, you would have seen that Christianity has quite a few more "facts" around which Christianity is based: Miracles of the sick being healed, Christ dying and rising from the dead, and other events that would not seem like usual occurrences.

In fact, the Virgin birth thing is not unique to the Christian religion, either. But I'm sure you knew that with said religious studies degree. As you probably already know, most religions focus around events that are not quite provable and highly unlikely. And that's were this little thing called "faith" comes in. However, if you believe that the only things that can happen are those things that normally occur, than yes, Christianity, and most world religions, will seem confusing and troubling to you.

Actually, the Hebrew word that was translated into the English word virgin can also mean maiden or young girl. The original concept of Jesus' birth has nothing to do with Mary being a virgin, that was a mistake in translation, look it up. The real concept was that a young girl gave birth to the son of God, which is idiotic to believe in the first place.

no longer all Christians do this. As someone who used to adhere to that philosophy, i'd be able to grant you an answer, besides the undeniable fact that. i'd say those authentic issues because of each and each of the adjustments i'd discover in church homes i'd bypass to. i'd develop into so annoyed with attempting to make certain out what i became "meant" to have self belief, i eventually gave up. I grabbed my Bible and all started examining. I do have a own relationship with Jesus, and through the Bible I discovered the way He needed me to stay. hence, i did not perceive myself with any particular denomination of Christianity. I merely lived because the Bible informed me I might want to.

Many have recognized the point you are making in notcing that the Hebrew prophecy does not call for a virgin to give birth, but an almah, that is a young woman, not necessarily a virgin. So for many Protestant churches, this issue is not really a big deal anymore.

You might enjoy the works of Marcus Borg if you haven't already read him. He writes about how we can learn to take the Bible seriously, while not taking it literally in every case.

Well, they don't base their entire religion on it. But obviously it's a core belief for most.

Doesn't really matter, they believe all sorts of illogical things. Mary had a baby called Jesus. Therefore Mary had to have had sex with someone. That's just human biology, and a damn sight more believable than the Christian explanation. Since she clearly felt the need to lie about it, perhaps that someone wasn't Joseph.

I suspect I shall incur some wrath for that but I'm not trying to be controversial, just looking at it analytically...

That's just a very small part of a much larger picture. And I seriously doubt that anyone here is actually willing to do the work of looking at the whole picture.

So you have a degree. So what? That just means you slept through some classes.

I am Roman Catholic and have been taught that Mary was a Virgin. Since you have a degree in Religious studies I am not going to quote the Catechism.

Actually they have had cases of that happen.

And isn't it silly of you to want to discredit a way for people to live eternally? I mean why do you buy insurance? Cause you might get in an accident. Why do we believe in God; because he might be there to give me eternal life; not a bad deal if you think about it. Certainly contains less negativity then the idea of death being the end....

no, because I base my religion on what God said happened, because I have faith in Him that what He said was true. Why did you study religion? Yes I believe that Mary had a child before she had sex. God works in mysterious ways. The religion then is not centered around the fact that a virgin had a baby, its centered around the baby that was born.

Maybe Christians think that Christianity is better than the alternatives.

By the way kubrickian, if you are going to complain that someone else "can't spell worth a sh*t", maybe you should learn how to use the "check spelling" button.

Have a nice day!
