I have known friends with these dogs but never owned one. Obviously, there temperment will vary from owner to owner but can someone give me a general idea what they are like for a pet?

They are very playful as puppies and very attatched to their owners. It really depends on the training you provide. I have a 12 wk old mini dachsund puppie named Oscar Mayer. He is a really good dog. He is almost potty trined outside. He still has a few accidents. We atrted him on pads by the door and eventually started taking him out. He is far from shy. Oscar is really good with other pets. He love our two cats and also loves other dogs. As a breed they love to chew and dig. You will need to be able to provide chew toys frequently because they will tear through them quickly. Keep things off the floor becuase they will chew it up. If you are a messy person and throw things on the floor this is not the pupppy for you. I would suggest that you use a crate when training. Make him sleep there and put him there when you are not home until he is old enough not to destroy things or pee/poop on the floor. They are very loveable and it is hard to stay mad at them when they misbehave because thay are so cute. They are easy to groom and take care of. Short hairs stink less than long haired or wire haired dacshunds.

Ok ..enough. I love mine and will get another one day.

Dachsies, standard or mini, are very fun and spirited, yet affectionate. They have a great sense of humor and play. They seem to think they are big. You must watch out not to hurt their long backs, so they're not the best dog for young kids who like to roughhouse. They love to go for walks but they can get by without a great deal of exercise. If you live in a cold climate they will thank you for putting a sweater on them outdoors. There are three coat types: shorthaired, longhaired, and wirehaired, with the short coat needing the least maintenance, as you would expect. They are a great choice for a pet.

That said, please consider adopting a dog or puppy from your local animal shelter. These dogs are usually much healthier, happier, better-adjusted, far less likely to have genetic defects, and less high-strung than any purebred, which translates to a lot fewer worries and vet bills over the life of the pooch. And a rescued shelter pet will always show more love and appreciation for a good home than one "with papers."

Dachsunds are Hounds and are bred to go to ground after vermin. They need to be fiesty to do that. The three different coat types can have very different personalities, so do your homework. Talk to some breeders at a show or field trial, that will be your best source of information. Buy a good book about them, try at dogwise.com.

The smooth minis are WAY to 'busy' for me, I like my lazy hounds!

mid to high energy dogs. Smart brave and fearless. Can be a bit yappy. Tends to be a bit shy I think.

They can be prone to back problems.

I have a beagle/basset cross named Molly and I really want a miniature daschund too.

my two are little yappers but they are good dogs. Someone from work tried to enter my house before I opened the door and Java bit him. The vet told me not to worry about that because he was protecting his home and it was a stranger to him.

Miserable tempers, feisty and difficult to train. Very nervous, bark a lot.

never owned one though.my nieghbor owned one and no one could get near it. it was very territorial and never let anyone but his family on their yard.it was very nerve getting cause wheno our volleyball rolle over there he would tear it up and we would have one less volleyball.
but of course it depends on how you train it is how it would act. they are so cute and trained properly, like any other dog, they will make great pets. don't let one dachshund change your mind about getting one.

Every dog is as smart and polite as you train him to be. My neighbor has one of those dogs and they're very playful.
