Its just you.

No, trail running really IS harder. More muscles are involved because of the uneven surface, and that tires you out more. Other surfaces that will really beat up your legs (but ultimately make them stronger and more stable): snow or sand. Try running 2 miles in 6or 8 inch snow...or 2 miles in SOFT sand. It is really hard...feels like 6 !

Yes, Trail running is harder for the following reasons:

1) You get less of a bounce. When you run on pavement, you do get some springboard effect where as on dirt / trail you get less. In addition, you have less traction, so your feet have to work harder.

2) Generally, trail running has more hills. This forces you to work harder. Even running down hill -- under control -- is hard work.

3) The uneven surfaces forces you to constantly be on guard. This takes more mental work and stresse your ankles to a larger degree.

So no, it isn't just you. I love trail running and some of the most difficult runs I've had were on trails. Once you get back on the roads you should find your performance enhanced because you will have built up your cardiovascular system.

Good luck.
