"Getting Up to the Plate" is your first date or getting to know each other.
"First Base" is kissing (french kissing/heavy)
"Second Base" is heavy petting and genital groping
"Third Base" is orgasm (non intercourse), or all clothes on the floor

The “Bases” came about in the 1920’s and 1930’s. They were handy ways for men to brag about how far they got without having to say “Breast” out loud.
1st base = kissing
2nd base = fondling the girl’s breasts
3rd base = Fondling the girl’s crotch
4th base (home) (called “Scoring” or “going all the way”) = having sex.
Even today you will hear radio announcers say “He scores!” or “He’s going to go all the way!” when a baseball player makes it to home.
You will notice several things. Girls were seen as objects, not partners. The object of a date was to see how far you could get, not to get to know a lady who might end up being your wife. Girls didn’t brag about how far they got. No one mentioned oral sex, group sex, mechanical sex or sex on a trapeze while covered with chocolate syrup with your best friend taking video to upload to the WWW.
Come the 1960’s and the birth control pill. Sexual customs got looser. People didn’t do anything different, they were just more willing to talk about it. (Ladies have three openings, men have three things they can put into them; tongue, finger, penis. People had figured out all nine combinations WAY before they build the pyramids in Egypt.)
The four bases above go through the standard stages of foreplay and intercourse. They worked until the 1960’s. In the standard list, there isn’t a base for giving oral sex or getting it. There isn’t a base for threesomes, anal sex or the trapeze act. However, young men need to brag about sex (They have been doing that since roughly three minutes after the invention of spoken language) so they altered the bases. Exactly which base means what depends on which high school you go to or which crowd you hang out with. Third base seems to be the catch-all for more than touching her breast and less than intercourse.
