Over brushing will cause split ends and exaggerated backcombing will also make the hair split since it is disturbing the cuticle.
Brushing hair when it is still wet is one of the most important causes for split ends because wet hair stretches by as much as 25%.
Coloring and perms make hair weak and vulnerable for split ends. This type of hair needs extra care and should be treated with the appropiate products. Use a lot of conditioner and comb your hair through before rinsing it out.
Heated appliances can make hair become dry and finally it splits. Try to avoid using heated hair appliances as much as possible! If you are using them anyway, make sure to protect your precious locks with a potective product.
Towel drying is not good if you want to avoid splitting hair. You should blot your hair and then carefully comb it through with a wide toothed comb. Avoid using a hair dryer as much as possible since the heat won't do any good to your hair.
Elastic bands and all sorts of other hair accessories can damage your hair. Avoid using uncovered elastic bands since these often pull out hair when being removed. Other accessories will damage or weaken the ends of the hair.
And last but not least: Your health will affect your hair.
If you have a dry scalp your hair will split faster because there is not enough lubrication on the hair follicle. Dull hair caused by a low fat diet will also be more vulnerable.
Hope this helps~

Well, coloring hair and perming it will give you spit ends. Blow drying and any kind of straightener or curler will damage your hair too. I personally leave my hair completely natural and I have very few split ends without getting trims every couple of months. If you must continue the blow drying and flat iron, I suggest a trim every month and air dry when you can.

It's the nature of long hair. Have it cut a little bit periodically and you'll be fine. Your hair should grow an inch or so a month. Cutting the ends a centimeter or so should keep the split ends out.

Trim more often and also try not to use heat every day. Use a product that has heat protectant before blow drying or flat ironing.

Hot oil treatments and a trim for your hair every 6 weeks should help. You can also use hair products which protects your hair from the heat or hair irons and blow dryers
Try all of the Biosilk products..they work amazingly well http://www.farouk.com/biosilk/biosilk/bs-cleanse.htm You can also buy BioSilk at most hair salons

Get a trim every once in a while. No hair product will help if you don't get your hair cut! Also, try a shampoo that helps with split ends like Pantene.

First, Get rid of your blowfryer and other heat stylers. That stuff is AWFUL for your hair.
Also, you're hair might not like cones (Ingredients that end in -cone or -conol) But any damage from this will be secondary to the heat.
Here's a suggestion. To REALLY see what shape your hair is in, stop using cones for a couple of weeks. Cones are a silent killer and you WON'T really get the full picture unless you go without them. (Some hair likes cones, but I suggest that you at least try a couple weeks of no-cone)
WARNING: Your hair might seem like it got worse with no cone. But it hasn't. Like I said before, cones are a silent killer.

Don't brush your hair when wet and start from the bottom up. I actually found the Garnier Fructis 'Long and Strong' Works really well for my hair. And it's cheap.

instead of having to iron and blow dry your hair, and since you have really thick tresses, have them trimmed, or layered so that it will not be so thick, conditioner works, and opt for anti-frizz products.
