You can get a really good pedometer for around $10.00 to $15.00 at most camping, running or sporting goods stores and if you take the time to calibrate it properly by measuring your stride, how many strides you take in a measured distance and then setting it properly, they can be very accurate.

Yes, a pedometer does that, although they aren't extremely accurate. You may want to check out the Garmin Forerunner (if you have the bucks to spend). They use a GPS to calculate how far you've moved. They don't work well in places like cities with tall buildings or if you are in the woods.

You can be fairly precise using a GPS (Expensive) or get a good estimate using a pedometer. (Cheap)
