My first chihuahua died two months ago, so we got another one about 4 weeks ago so people wouldn't feel bad...now the dog we have now is dying from parvo...I'm depressed.

Sorry your puppy is dying, but you probably didn't get her from a good breeder. Maybe a pet shop? Check this ASPCA site for the Puppy Lemon laws in your state - you may be able to get your money back. DON'T get another pup from the same place, or you'll have the same problem.

Parvo is highly contagious for a long time, so don't get another puppy for at least six months. Clean everything washable in your house with a 10% bleach solution. Throw out any toys, bowls or blankets that the puppy used. When you are ready to get a new pup, find a GOOD breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money. The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are often kept in deplorable conditions - spending their entire lives in small wire-bottomed cages. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there.

These so-called "breeders" have now figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

This happens. You might want to take a break from pets for a while, take some time to heal from your loss.
That, or go save a new dog from the pound. Saving a animals life will really help raise your spirits, and it will take time.

Of course, wait until the other passes on so that it doesn't get Parvo too. Parvo is such a heartbreaking thing. I feel your pain.

I'm not sure how a dog could slowly die from parvo. Parvo works fast. It could kill a puppy in 3 days, once symptoms start, without treatment. Are you saying that the puppy is at the vet getting treated & your expecting the worse?

im deeply sorry about your loss of the first dog , but you said you got a chihuahua that is slowly dying of parvo , have you taken it to vets for meds and if so are you giving it the meds on time . if there is no hope for the little one why in the name of god would you let the poor little thing suffer. i have 4 dogs and they are like my kids,i know this may sound callius but why prolong their pain, i would put mine to sleep and end their misery . they are such tiny dogs. if it was me dying and there was no hope i pray that my family would do the same end my suffering .

Parvo is treatable a lot of the time. Is your dog at the vet now in treatment?? I've worked at a vet clinic as an assistant and the majority of puppies, at least, survive parvo with the appropriate treatment. If he's not in treatment....get him to a vet!! My prayers are with you and your dog.

Also, this is why we have vaccinations against parvo.....EVERYONE!! Vaccinate your animals!!

Parvo stays in the environment for some time. Get cleaning with bleach, it is very hard to get rid of.

I hope your puppy is getting treatment.

I am very sorry to hear you are going through such a tragedy twice together. May God bless you.
I remember when my childhood sheltie died, it was devestating, Dogs are such faithful, beautiful friends.
Remember and be sad for awhile, but your cute pets would want you to be happy eventually. They'd lick your hand to help you feel better.
Be there for this pooch, like he/she would be for you if could.
Thank you for sharing.
