1.) Where are your religious and spiritual questions?
2.) Writing poetry can put you in touch with something inside you that is probably more spiritual in nature than your outer self. It is totally honest, totally fair and puts altruistic feelings above self-interested motives. When you tap it, It reveals a spiritual being inside that grows there even if you are unaware of it, one that sometimes seeks to express itself. When you are able to let its expression come out, it is more natural, less stiff and controlled than your outer self. It speaks directly to the similar inner self in others, so they also get a response they didn't know was inside them, and it gives them a sense of wonder that makes them feel good as well as makes them more receptive to what you have written. At least half the effort of writing poems that satisfy yourself is getting things adjusted so that your inner self can participate in the process.

The act of writing poetry isn't spiritual by itself. It becomes a spiritual act when as a poet you channel through words and rhythm a god like essence. The spiritual is like Jacob wrestling with god at the riverside demanding his blessing. That is what a spiritual poet does wrestles with a God through words and demands his blessed truth. Poets like Maya Angelou and I know why the Caged Bird Sings.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
It's between man and God, fellowship. I think God likes to sit back and read the works of his spiritual poets who've wrestled with him and left only limping. That's faith. Spiritual poets are those who go in the lion den and don't say "holy **** lot of lions here, the end". They say "I see a lot of lions I wonder what they have to tell me, let me get my pen".

Maybe the spiritual aspect of poetry comes from the reader. Whatever the poet feels comes through in his words. People respond accordingly.
Some poets are deeply spiritual and it shows in their work.
Some people are good at putting words together.

there is a spiritual connection for poets. they have a gift of words. I am a poet and I have always been in love with words.
the Bible says "in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God" not that poets are God or even like him, but...
poets speak words to the heart through the power of words.

1. sure
2. Some poets write about spiritual subjects. Others write humorous or comercial jingles.
My favorite spiritual poem
I remember this poem from Junior High, it was supposedly written by James Henry Leigh Hunt, that refers to the Book of Life. I've never forgotten this poem and it's meaning.
Abu Ben Adam (may his tribe increase)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace
And saw, within the moonlight of his room
Making it rich, like a lily in bloom
An angel writing in a book of gold.
Exceeding peace had made Abu Ben Adam bold
And to the presence in his room he said
'What writest thou?'
The vision raised its head
And with a look of all sweet accord
Answered: 'The names of those who love the Lord
'And is mine one?' said Abu.
'Nay not so' Replied the Angel:
Abu spoke more low
But cheerily still and said 'I pray thee then
Write me as one that loves his fellow-men'
The angel wrote and vanished. The next night
It came again with awaking light
And showed the names of whom love of God had blessed.
And lo! Ben Adam's name led all the rest.

I would be willing to help you look for the answers but only you can find them.
Being a poet means that you must have an open and expressive mind, any knowledge of yourself can help that.

anyone can write a few sentences that rhyme .. this doesn't make them a poet it makes them good with words
not anyone can write poetry without having a passion in them which in my opinion is as spiritual as it gets
to have a passion to create .. to give to others through words .. to reach people through a few lines ... doesn't that sound spiritual ?

Nothing. Poets speak in riddles rather than in truth.
