the bottom one doesn't move at all (and rests between your middle and ring finger). it's just the top stick that moves with your thumb and index finger. Mostly it is your index finger doing the work while your other fingers are just holding it. I'd try practicing not on food but other small objects until you get faster and more proficient. sometimes on the package of the sticks it has directions as well. the asians eat rice that is sticky and it is because it's easier to pick it up with the chopsticks...american rice is no good! good luck.

First of all, it has to be the right kind of 'sticky' rice. Assuming you are eating it in a chinese restaurant, it's easy:

Hold the chop sticks so they are PARALLEL and about 1/4 inch apart, then shovel them into the rice as if you are going to pick up the rice but, just as you reach the end of how much rice you want, start bringing the chop sticks together in a sort of 'pinching' motion and it will fill up the space between them with rice...

You do need to be eating the rice from a bowl... I always put my rice in a soup bowl... because it makes it easier to scoop the rice up... and you won't get as much rice using chop sticks as you will from a fork but with a little practice you can do a fair job.

If all else fails, have the chinese waiter show you... they usually don't mind and they like the extra tip you are going to leave them.

rice is best eaten with chopsticks with a bowl. if youre eating out of a plate you better give up. from a bowl, slide the rice lumps against the sides and then pinch together using the sticks. good luck!

First off, most rice in the US is white rice which has the sticky outer surface and most of the nutrients removed.

Try with Brown rice, be sure to use a little extra water for this. The rice has to hold together in clumps, not be loose like in Mediterranean cooking.

Try practicing with popcorn.

mold a bunch. then carefully pick it up your bowl, but not too tight. practice with maki or sushi first, because chopstick-ing rice is generally for experts. but if you do not want to be embarassed in a date, just order a spoon instead. it is much easier.

scoop them... little by little... you may lift the bowl 2 yr mouth and use d chopsticks 2 scoop them straight i2 yr mouth, but that's not really nice.... a gd way 2 practice in private though... when u're better... try not 2 put d bowl 2 yr mouth... and when u've improved, there's no need 2 lift d bowl nemore... gd luck!

While hardly acceptable by western standards, and Asian will lift the plate or bowl to his/her mouth and "scrape" the rice in.

don't pinch, scoop. hold them a little apart and level with the table.
