9-10 years should be long enough. But why not pop into your nearest good bookshop and look in Hugh Johnsons Pocket Wine Book 2006 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1840009454/sr=8-1/qid=1152981557/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-9874734-6961409?ie=UTF8 and see what Hugh says? If you've got 3rd Growths they'll be listed by name with symbols next showing their drinkability.

Alternatively post the names and vintages on a wine boards such as http://www.wine-pages.com/cgi-bin2/ultimatebb.cgi? or http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewforum.php?f=3

The 1997 should mature before the 1996 and is not such a good vintage so I'd try that first

Open the bottle and smell it... If the nose is mature then it is ready to drink. If not, then you have to drink it anyway.

Ready....but should keep another 5 years, if being properly stored.
