Bless you for looking to adopt an adult dog.
A great place to start is Petfinder. This site lists all of the humane societies and rescue groups across North America. You can do a search for a specific breed (including age and sex) or rescue groups nearest you. Some of the dogs are purebreds and some are mixed breeds (mutts).
Good luck in finding your dog.

You can look online and see if there is a rescue group in your area. Pure breed dogs very frequently will have a specific rescue group. The other place you can try is to contact breeders in your area, and see if they have any females that are either not going to be bred or are done having puppies. Either way, make sure that you consider the problems that a bulldog may have, such as breathing difficulties, and allergies. Good luck!
