People who make blanket statements about things often do not bother to really investigate the subjects of their pronouncements. Same with people who deny evolution, how many of them have bothered to learn what evolution really is.

And a lot of atheists have read the bible. I agree with you, an atheist who is unfamiliar with the bible doesn't have much ground to stand on if they want to discuss with Christians.
On the other hand, most Christians who cite the bible are well not well-informed about secular bible study or alternative viewpoints.
Often what we get when atheists and Christians communicate or debate is very little intersection of ideas, so it goes nowhere.

If she feels like reading the Bible would not be an effective use of her time, she shouldn't read it. Atheists shouldn't have to read every religious text out there as a prerequisite to atheism, since one could conceive of a near-infinite variety of religions; all the atheist needs is his or her own belief that no gods exist, and hopefully (assuming he or she is moderately self-aware) the reasons he or she feels that way, as well.
The goal of religious debate should be a philosophical uplifting, a better understanding of the human condition... not trying to trip up members of a particular sect with snappy quotes to back up your perceived contradictions in their holy text(s).

You want to get someone kicked off here because they didn't read your favorite book? Don't you think that is a bit petty? There is no law requiring people to follow any religion, if you don't like peoples choices, yes it may annoy you, but you would soon object if people tried to force you to be a Muslim or an Atheist. If we're entirely honest isn't it a bit childish to be upset that people disagree with you, even if their exact phrasing may seem disrespectful and offensive to you. "Judge not lest thee shall be judged" etc
PS: No I am not a Christian and yes I have read the Bible.

Interesting point.
I'm a Christian, though a very open minded one.
My boyfriend is quite a hard-core agnostic (his favorite saying is "I don't know and you don't either!!!") He's spent quite a bit of time reading the Bible, and last week he told me that he thought his arguments were getting a bit rusty, and that he needed to go read up on some stuff in the Bible.
(Sometimes I think he knows it better than me).

the bible contains many viewpoints and many alternative ways to live your life. i dont consider myself atheist but im not a christian either but the bible does offer you a set of ethics and values that can be applied to anyones life. u dont have to take religious texts religiously. just like anyone who believes in the power of the human on its own, u should read books that help give u a philosophy to live by, the bible helps in that.
as to that woman calling the bible evil, thats only ignorance, if she hasnt read it she cant call it evil

You run it how you want to run it.
At least she has picked a side, and will probably believe anything she hears contrary to the Bible. Okay, so she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is there no compassion in Jim Darwinism?
You have the power!

Only if you give a crap about western relgion and feel like you may be wrong. Maybe you are agnostic. The book should not be what gives you faith. You have it or you don't. I don't. But I like spirituality and the bible has spiritual things in it like other books that exist from other cultures.

Not if the atheist has placed the Bible in the same basket as the Koran, and other human-contrived religious books, where they belong.
