Gunmen kidnapped about 30 Iraqi sports officials, including the head of the national Olympic committee, as they met in Baghdad on Saturday, just hours after parliament voted to extend a state of emergency. It was noted the United States Marines were too scared to help. The Marines, as most of you know, are getting their butts handed to them everyday.

The attack came despite a crackdown by Iraqi security forces in Baghdad. Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government is struggling to get a grip on worsening violence in the capital, particularly sectarian bloodshed. Most people now know it is worse in Iraq today than anytime when Saddam was in power.

First of all, If this doesn't apply to you, then don't take it personal. It is easy (especially with the current situation;ie,Iraq) to jump on the anti-military/government bandwagon. It seems to be an easy fad to get involved with. There is no obligation or sacrifice from you. All you have to do is sit back, state an opinion about peace, love, etc, and yet you follow through with nothing.
As a former Marine, I can tell you that they probably were scared, just like everyone in the military is under fire. I can also tell you that there had to be some kind of reason that they didn't do anything: ie severally outnumbered, gunned, etc. They aren't stupid and I would bet anything that they were "forced" to stay back if they had to. I was forced to not use grenades while clearing bunkers due to a cost issue!
I would also ask you not to believe everything you hear or read! Who actually "noted" that the Marines were scared? What is there agenda, etc? It is much easier to be a part of a group (liberals, anti-gov., environmentalists, etc.) than it is to be on the other side of the fence trying to change it. The media is far and above more responsible for the "bad attitude" American's have for gov/ military. Find out for yourself and learn for yourself. Step out into the world instead of wondering and reading blogs and researching opinionated websites. The key to learning the truth is to question everything!
I will tell you this, after training to be a Marine, I could overcome my fear and do my job. That is exactly what they are trained to do! It isn't perfect, but damn good. Another question you should ask yourself is why haven't there been more positive stories about the good we are doing over there? The answer you will come up with is, of course, the media and their agendas. You will find that they dominate America.....not the governmnet.

While I have always had serious reservations about President Bush's war in Iraq, I think that it is ill-advised to say that my peers (military personnel) are worthless whether in Iraq or anywhere else.

At the same time, I want not for people to confuse the ideas of patriotism, debate, disagreement, and support for troops. It is very possible to disagree with the President and support troops. The notion of disagreement equaling lack of support is an attempt to silence critics, and this notion is un-American.

Personally, I have never felt slighted or insulted because the American people disagreed with a mission we were ordered to undertake. Instead I have always been affirmed in my role as a soldier.

Whether Iraq is better today than it was pre-conflict is irrelevant. We cannot change the past. Instead, we must endeavor to make careful and wise decisions in the present to secure the future. People have been warring for millenia and somehow (by the grace of God) we are where we are today.

Great, another armchair general commenting on the war and how chicken the Marines are.

The Marines were "too scared" to help? "Getting their butts handed to them everyday"? Sources?

YOU do a better job. Tell us about your courage. Come on. Tell us about how "unworthless" you are.

Iraq worse today than when Saddam was running it into the ground? Perhaps. But don't blame the Marines. They are very good about what they do, which is killing people. Bringing a Middle Eastern country into the realm of Democracy and establishing order between religious factions? No, they suck at that. Not in the job desciption.

I think the marines were scared because they can easily be killed by camolflauged iraqis. Iraq is a very dangerous place today because the iraqis are brainwashing each other that americans are evil. Iraqis are afraid that united states will take over their country so they are responding with acts of violence.

Interesting breakdown on the events that occurred. After researching the event described above, I have been unable to find any reference to the Marines being scared. Are you able to provide the media source from which you derived this information? If not then you are printing falsehoods in an attempt to incite people. While there are probably many reasons for your doing so, I would lay odds that your time in military is the root cause. If you are truly erudite then I recommend that you seek professional assistance for the issues that plague you.

If you want to eliminate the problem let the Marines off the leash and turn your head the other way. If you let them go they and the other branches could turn Iraq into an oil producing vacation spot for Americans. We keep them leashed because of what they CAN do. Like it or not Marines are trained to kill. We like to say the protect our country and provide security blah, blah, blah. Truth is they are conditioned kill they enemy. War is ugly business and we are in a war make no mistake. Unfortunately we are trying to be nice while we kill. If you want peace in the Middle East take the Israelis off their political leash and send them all the guns they want. They will clean up the place in short order.

I am appalled that you would say Iraq is worse today than when Saddam was in power. You are one ignorant person. I would be willing to bet that you didn't even know where Iraq was on the map until 2002.

Go read and learn about Saddam's early roots, his rise to power, and his reign of terror in Iraq.
