Physical activity - walking, keeping fit any form of regular exercise for 30 mins every day. Do you like pets - they can relieve stress - im a dog lover. Get more interests in your life to help improve your confidence, motivation and self esteem.

I know its easier said than done. Depression is tough. The fact that you asked this question means that you are anxious to solve the problem and make changes to your lifestyle. Well done for making that step. Others would just lay down and make no effort whatsoever to help themselves. Keep making small steps like this every day and you will beat it.

Good luck

I donno, but when you find out, pls let me know! just kiddin'...depression is a thing that needs to be handled seriously, so you already made the first step. I think you should talk to your wife about this, don't be afraid to ask her help. Then try to keep yourself busy, do stuff for children and wife, and friends, surprise them (of course, in a pleasant way...)When you succeed in making the people you care about happy, then you will too be happy. So focus more on the others, and communicate about what you feel all the time. medication can help, but their is no better treatment than your friends and family's love and affection. Also, ask for God's help, and don't forget to thank Him, because (if u ask me) u are already a successful person-you have a family and you care about it. try to enjoy little pleasures of life, and show concern and care for the others. You may think it's easy for me to talk, but actually it's not -been there, done that, and I know how it feels, and that it's hard. the most important thing- never give up fighting these moods, if u fail, try again. You may take a little step, but to yur family this will be a great step . And another thing-sport can help you improve your self esteem-but make sure once you start it, keep on to it! You know the saying: A healthy mind in a healthy body!

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - it will teach you how to rethink situations and improve your overall outlook on life as well change negative behavior patterns. Change your negative self-talk by monitoring how many times a day you think or say something negative. Replace the negative information with something positive. This will not happen overnight and takes some practice to change how you currently live your life. You will start to see increase in self-esteem and self confidence. Medication helps too but it's more important to change your thinking and behaving process. Consider this.... if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

(1) Maybe up the fluoxetine for a while. I started on 40mg and upped to 80mg. Within 18 months I was back down to 20mg and now it's one tab every two or three days.

(2) Therapy. Good therapy. Three or four sessions with a seriously good private therapist are worth twenty with some eejit psychiatrist SHO who's just doing their hours so they can get a ticket.

(3) Go write bad poetry to yourself. Get it out

(4) Take serious amounts of time with all of the above. None of it will be helped by rushing. You can't rush a plant to grow, can you? It has its own time. Follow it, but nurture it.

have you tried st johns wort tablets? i used them and they do work and are a good herbal alternative to anti depressants. as for the low asteem, try a new hair cut, maybe some new clothes. people will tell u how great you look which will give you a great boost.
i would also try meditation. sounds silly i know but it is very relaxing and you can learn a lot about yourself, you may find out why you are so low.
dont push your family away, ask their advice on what you can do to feel a bit better. the only person who knows you better than them is you!
communication is the key. if these things dont help you may want to consider seeing a councilor. trust me it does not mean you are weak if you ask for help.
good luck and take care.

I WILL ANSWER THRU MY OWN EXPERIENCE. GO BACK TO DR. AND DISCUSS YOUR CONCERNS W/ THE MEDS. IT TAKES 2 WEEKS TO ADJUST. CHANGE MEDS IF YOU NEED TO. GET MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HELP AND SUPPORT OUTSIDE YOUR FAMILY..FOR THIS ONE.I MYSELF DO AND PRACTICE THE 12 STEPS OF RECOVERY..A LIFE SAVING GIFT. I USED TO BE JUST LIKE HOW YOU FEEL. I DO NOT ANYMORE. IT DOES TAKE WORK ON YOUR PART. AND THAT IS TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL..GRIEVING OVER PAST LOSSES AND EXPECTATIONS, ABANDONMENT ISSUES AS A CHILD.
ALSO I HAD TO LEARN TO START LOVING MYSELF AND FIND MY WORTHINESS AS A HUMAN BEING AND THAN AS A WOMAN. I HAD TO ACCEPT MYSELF..THAT WAS PROBABLY THE HARDEST THING..GO FIGURE!
AND LASTLY ...REACH OUT TO A GOD THAT YOU FIND SOME FAITH IN AND ..PRAY. YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE THAT IDEA...BUT GIVE IT A TRY.....WISH YOU WELL..GRACE

Exercise, for example running and doing push-ups and sit-ups will help ease your depression and you will feel more confident. Stay on your medicine and try to jog 1 to 3 miles a day or walk 1 to 3 miles a day. One of my in-laws has depression and shes on medicine and she says exercising helps ease her depression. After exercising you will feel better.

from my depression state; i stopped taking my med (may not help you) i was starting to have seizures, if you change some of your everyday habits it will help, stop drinking everyone does once in awhile, you need to clean your system, and the meds may not be right for your body with new ones being introduced all the time they experiment with our bodies, i changed jobs that added to my depression also,i started taking me time. just start talking with your wife its free therapy that helps; see from her point of view what can help; paying for therapy was a waste of money for me, now i can drink in moderation and don't have mood swings i found out through my spouse and kids what i needed to change and they helped me. good luck
