Unfortunately, most of the people who answered this either had no understanding of medicne or didnt read your question. Here is the correct answer:
You are a man whose urine culture was positive for gram postive bacilli and you have prostatic enlargement. This combination of facts means to your doctor that you have ACUTE PROSTATITIS. This means that the reason of your first symptoms was NOT likely to be due to a urine infection in your bladder but due to infection in your prostate.
Acute prostatitis is the most common urological problem in men under 50. It is often associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement of the prostate with aging). When gram positive rods cause it, these germs most often came from your skin. It is unlikely to be an STD if the organism is a gram positive rod. You can have sex if your doctor makes sure that there isnt an STD as well- the prostatitis by itself shouldnt make you give up sex.

It's very unusual for a male to have a urinary track infection because his urethra is so long in the penis that the bacteria will never make it to the bladder. However, if you have prostate enlargement (BPH) chances are that you were not emptying your bladder completely and the bacteria grew there. When your prostate enlarges, it presses on your urethra and you sometimes cannot urinate. The urine stays in your bladder. Get some information on BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and that will ease your mind. I'm not sure sex would be a problem. Hopefully, you are being treated for the prostatic enlargement and the UTI. Good luck.

Gram-negative bacilli are the most common cause, but enterococci and chlamydiae have also been associated with chronic infection. ( Quinolones is the most prescribe antibiotic for this but is not the best treatment almost every one that takes quinolones ends up with some kind of injury to the tendons please before taking quinolones search "quinolones victims" they are alternatives there is a trail of people with qonolone related injuries that goes from new york to California)

Gram negative rods such E.coli do not cause prostatic enlargement. This is not an organism of STD and antibiotics should clear it shortly for resumation of sex.

'Gram positive' refers to how the bacteria reacts in a staining procedure (the Gram procedure). It is not a specific type as both staph and strep, for example, can be gram positive.
Without knowing more about the specific bacteria, we can't answer your specific question. Your doctor is the best source of information at this point.

Why would you accept the answers of people here on something so important as opposed to talking to your doctor about it?
