I would not put anything artificial. I am allergic to MSG and make it almost my mission to discourage the use of it. All commercial gravy or soup cans or packets have it, even the so-called fancy ones like Knorr. I make beef stew all the time. Add bones with marrow to the sauce, and if you want, a few ocra or one potato, to make your sauce thicker. Try spicing it with "'allspice," it will taste awesome.

Actually a friend gave me a recipe for beef stew years ago that is wonderful and it's secret ingredient is cranberries. Prepare your stew as you usually do but add 1 -2 cans of whole cranberries. It is amazing. Try it - hope your family likes it as much as mine.

during the depression when meat was so expensive, people would cook pinto beans and onions and garlic blend them to make a high protein broth. when you add your vegetables and meat doesn't take near as much to make a hearty stew.
