It depends on your situation, of course.
The Canadian Immigration Website is at
http://www.cic.gc.ca/
It is really quite comprehensive and easy to follow. Download the various application forms and view them over to give yourself an idea of what you need.
You can get an employer to file for a work visa if you get a job in Canada, or one in another country that will send you to canada. There are rings to jump through of course.
If you are married to or living with a canadian, or get married to a canadian, you can be sponsored as family class.
Other family members can also sponsor you.
There are other classes as well, just read through them all.
If you are married to a canadian, you can get a tourist visa first, and live in canada while applying for permanent residency. In all other cases, you have to apply from outside the country and wait until Permanent Residency is approved to enter the country.
I am presently in the Immigration process myself.

You can look at the Canadian immigration website to determine which type of visa you would apply for:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/
There are various routes that people take to obtain permanent residency in Canada. There is a family class visa, skilled worker visa, etc. I warn you, processing times for permanent residency visas are over 2 years at the moment, and there is an application fee. However, the website explains all this.
Alternatively, if you are in a high demand profession, you can apply for a temporary work permit. This requires an employer who is very keen to get you into Canada to start working.
Hope this helps.

Actually first stage approval of a permanent residency takes 7-8 months... the website listed www.cic.gc.ca is a very good website. The number that is listed to call the government is very good. Depending on how you are doing it there are little bits and pieces that you might miss. Ask alot of questions and know what you are doing before you submit anything. If you don't do it right the first time then it just delays your application. Talk to your local immigration office and ask them everything you need to know.
