Thats right, i reccomend having a squirt bottle handy and to put tin foil on the counter and a stern voice. Therefore they can associate the counter with getting wet, feeling something wierd on their feet and plus the parents getting angry with them. It might also be important to make sure they are getting enough to eat and drink. Supply toys so they can have things to play with. Also make sure that there is nothing tempting on the counter to make them want to get up there.

The cat will grow out of it, just pick it up and take it down, don't be mean. Those that say use a water bottle is wrong or slapping your hands is wrong too, one reason about the water bottle, when you try to give it a bath, it will be terrified because the water in the face and kitty will relate it to being bad therefore it will feel that giving it a bath it, will feel like you are mad and it is being punished. The other thing, the hand slap or noise as some do that, - This can and will lead into serious problems that can lead into a possibile heart attack. This causes noise phobia. Noises that a cat can't identify or any loud noises can cause the cat to be terrified and hyperventilate and even be afraid of people that come into your home or nearly die near the 4th of July. Just tell the cat to get down, then take it down, shake your finger at it and say no, stay down, eventually kitty will understand and will stop this, So be patient.

Try a water squirt bottle. Give the cats a squirt each time you catch them on the counters.. it may take a little bit but they will associate getting on the counters with getting wet and stay off.

We have 2 cats. The only way to keep them off things is to constantly tell them to GET DOWN !
Push them off. Just like teaching a little kid.
We have a male cat and he liked laying on our bed a lot. So we got him a cat bed for himself. He sometimes wants our bed, but we tell him to GET all the time and he listens. After a while they get the picture.

Oh yeah, A squirt bottle works everytime too for our other hard-headed snooping cat.

i used two ways:

one: put aluminum paper on the counters all over the noise will cause her to get down.

the other one is everytime you see her on the counters tell her no and pushing her gently with your hand on her rear guide her down the counter.

it will take time but she will learn she's not allowed.
also don't leave any food to tempt her to go on the counter.

My granddaughter used a squirt bottle. It worked with her cat...now she's trying to train a new kitten she got about 6 weeks ago.

try hanging a magazine or newspaper over the edge, they will jump onto that and fall. they think its the counter but its not. it scares them. so they'll quit.
