Use fresh meat, not procesed. Turkey, Chicken, Roast Beef are best.
Many people do not seem to realize that the layering of the ingredients is extremely important in the taste of any sandwich. I can put all the mayonnaise in the world on the bread, but if the turkey is tasteless or dry, the sandwich is disappointing.Try the following:
2 slices Texas Toast -style whole grain or 12 Grain with Oats and Honey bread.
1 Tablespoon spreadable pure butter
Real Mayonnaise - add horseradish for beef sandwich (never Miracle or Salad Whip)
Dijon Mustard (only Dijon - none other)
Thick slices of turkey, chicken or beef
4 thin slices of tomato
3 thin slices of Vidallia onion
Crisp inner rib of Romaine Lettuce
2 large basil leaves
salt
fresh cracked black pepper
Spread your bread with butter, both slices.
Spread each slice with 1 teaspoon real mayonnaise ( mixed with horseradish for Beef)
Place Basil leaves on one slice
Place turkey slices on basil
Spread a good dollop of mayonnaise & Dijon on turkey slices
Layer tomato slices on turkey
Put Salt and cracked pepper on tomato - don't be shy!
Layer onion slices on tomato
Layer Romaine lettuce on onion
Put second slice of bread on top, press lightly, and enjoy!
There really is a difference!! Whenever you are at a sandwich or sub shop, tell them to put your order in this order and it will taste 100% better.
Good Luck!

4 large tomatoes
1 large onion
1 head garlic
olive oil
salt and pepper
1/4 cup butter, softened
3 ciabatta (6 - 8 inch loaves)
3/4 lb roast beef
3/4 lb pastrami
1/2 lb munchee cheese
Preheat oven to 325F, line a sheet pan with foil.
Slice the tomatoes and onion to about 1/4-1/6 of an inch thick.
Wrap the garlic in foil and place on the sheet pan along with the onions and tomatoes.
Drizzle the onions and tomatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Place in the oven and roast for 1 hour.
When done remove from the oven and unwrap the garlic, cut it in half and squeeze all the cloves out of it into a small bowl; stir in the butter.
Take the ciabatta and cut them in halves.
Evenly spread on the garlic butter mixture on both sides of the bread then begin to layer the bottom half with cheese, then pastrami, then beef, then onion, tomatoe, more cheese and then the top half of the bread.
Wrap the sandwiches in foil and place on a clean sheet pan.
Place another sheet place on top, and weight it down with a big iron skillet.
Place in the 325F oven and 15-20 minutes.
These sandwiches are great to make ahead of time too!

My rave fave type of sandwich goes like this:
stack some smoked turkey on a slice of wheat bread that's been generously mayonaissed, then add a few slices of honey ham. Next add a few leafs of lettuce (iceberg or romane are recommended), a few slices of a beefstake tomato, chopped onion, and then add a little salt and pepper. Finish it off with a few slices of bacon, mustard, and the other slice of bread and you are officially in sandwich heaven my friend.

Hi...
I guess it depends what mood your in..and what kind of sandwich's you like..I will give you two of my all time favorites...one is a summer sandwich..and one is for a fall or winter day...
1. summer: the old fashioned peanut butter and jelly....
take 2 pieces of sweet bread (portugese)...make sure they are fresh...
slather on creamy honey peanut butter (or soy butter)
then spread on some strawberry jam (or any flavor..depending on mood..but strawberry is my favorite)
*sometimes I use fluff and bananas also
then put together and cut it into 2 triangles and enjoy..
* a cup of cold milk goes well with this
Winter: Grilled cheese sandwhich
take 2 pieces of white bread , lots of cheese, ketchup and oregano and butter and a electric griddle (or stove top)
on one piece of bread...spread ketchup on bread, sprinkle with a little oregano, then put the cheese on, then put the other slide of bread on. Butter the top piece and lay that face down on a hot griddle, then butter the other end....let get brown and then flip..when done the cheese will be melted and the bread will be a golden brown
*Tomato soup goes well with this
*other sandwich ideas: 1 slice of multi grain bread, 1 avacado and a little salt and may (miracle whip)....spread miracle whip, put on sliced avacado's and then a little salt and eat as an open faced sand.
good luck..you made me hungry as well with this question...

i read all of the answers submitted at this time. and though i agree that your personal tastes have to be involved, i decided to take this in a different direction. the only recipe for the perfect sandwich is
2 slices of your favorite bread....and
3 to 4 slices of perfection

I start out with french bread, then some turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato and top it all off with some honey mustard. YUM! Sometimes some swiss cheese, too.
