If a cat hisses, does that mean it knows that something has intentions of hurting it?

Hissing is supposed to be intimidating. It is a reaction I used to think that the cat could sense hostility and that was why they hiss at dogs and such, but I found that I was wrong. I put my dog's old collar up to a newborn kitten four hours old (they cannot see at that age) and it hissed.
My dog is very gentle but terrified of cats. I had two litters at one time of different mothers, and the kittens from one litter would hiss and spit, but the others were only curious.
Besides dogs, cats will also hiss at strange cats, but I have never had a cat hiss at a rabbit or a bird (prey animals). I think it is generally on instinct or as a reaction to something unknown that unsettles them. Still... maybe we'll never really know.

Every cat my dog has met hissed for half a second before either taking off like a bat out of hell or forever not hissing again, so I guess that means it can sense their enemies.

All animals have a sixth sense when it comes to anything. A cat will hiss when it feels threatened just like a dog barks when threatened. They just know. Same could go for when a cat or dog knows when bad weather is coming before we do. They just know these things.

I'm sure that's the reason why they hiss.

My cat had never seen a dog before, and I brought her down to see the dog next door, and as soon as she saw it, she went nuts..so somehow they do know
