Squirrel Ate the Shoo Fly Pie Pie Recipe From the local Amish/Mennonite cookbook put together by the local Mennonite/Amish.
Crumb Topping
4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon spices
1/2 cup shortening (no butter)
Syrup Filling
1 cup dark molasses
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 eggs
12 servings
1. The Mixed spices are nutmeg, cinnamon and mace and equal 1/2 tsp total. Do NOT use butter.
2. Add the baking soda to the 1 cup of hot water. Stir and let cool. Add the eggs to the molasses and add to the cooled water. This is your syrup mixture.
3. Have 2 - 9" pie shells ready.
4. Pour syrup filling in crusts, dividing portions equally. Sprinkle crumb mixture over syrup, dividing equally between the two shells. Leave a little "arr" in the center of the pies for expansion and to prevent the mixture from boiling over.
5. Bake 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes at 350 to 375 degrees. "arr" means to let a little of syrup in center without crumbs.
Yes, they certainly know how to prepare some good eats...I've tried the pie and it's good.

Since most all their food is made from scratch how can it not be great. I think it is very good. Fried chicken, homemade noodles and ice cream, casseroles, soft pretzels, shoofly pie...(which is great, made with mollasses) except that it attracts flies. Wonder why Shoefly pie?
Shoefly Pie made out of mollasses. We all eat these pies now but it use to be made to outsmart the houseflies, horseflies, the green-yellow shinny flies. when they made other pies like apple, cherry, etc . They would place them on a window sill to cool. Right in the middle of the fruit pies the would place a mollasses pie. The flies would land and gather on the mollasses pie and not the fruit pies. The PA Dutch used this as a way to keep the flies off the other pies. Hence the name: THE SHOEFLY PIE!

I have found that Amish or Mennonite women are just like any other women. Some can cook and bake really well, and some are not such good cooks/bakers.
I went to a flea market where some Amish women were selling baked goods, and they weren't all that terrific. My husband was convinced that the pie filling tasted more like canned filling than from-scratch pie filling. Who knows.

OOO - 2 questions. various the good style is definitely the indisputable fact that it somewhat is handcrafted. Even various the components are living house grown. in case you ever shop in a food market in an Amish area, you will discover much less interior the way of preservatives; greater like going to a organic ingredients keep. there isn't any longer something like handmade bread achieved via experts- or cookies, or muffins. only marvelous. And there somewhat is just one thing approximately issues cooked in a wood fueled oven that only adjustments the flavour, makes it greater effective. Even a gass oven makes it greater effective - some thing with regard to the flame, i think of. 2d question- it may be great to be like that- besides the undeniable fact that it somewhat is tricky. i've got had the excitement of gaining knowledge of to stay a much less complicated life-form - an historic one, in case you would be wanting to place it that way. I actual have the double excitement of quickly shifting to a house that has a working wood cookstove (as properly as a results of fact the well known range and kitchen). living like it somewhat is an entire day of paintings, yet possible greater achieved and an enhanced feeling approximately your self when you get via those accomplishments - there is a few thing tangible you will discover, touch, scent that brings that sense of having achieved properly. i do no longer actual be conscious of if i ought to do it each and every of the time, given the alternative- besides the undeniable fact that it may be exciting to aim! we'd specific al be in greater effective shape, that is for specific.
