You truly don't have to look any farther than your own local nursing home.
There are many elderly people who live in those homes, who have no one to visit or even take time with them!
When I lived and worked in New Orleans 6 years ago, the hotel I worked for (Hilton Garden Inn) set up an employee community help group. We chose the closest nursing home as our "group" to help. We had parties during the holidays, special events, carol sings during Christmas, and weekly visits.
The people there were so happy when we walked in....because so many had just been abandoned by their families, forgotten by friends, or just alone in the world.
And it makes you feel really wonderful inside to know you're making their last days here on earth as good as you can, giving them so much from the heart makes YOU feel loved and wanted too.

Adopt- A-Grandparent, but its not national. (Maybe someday it will be!)
Since October 2002, the organization Young Inspiration has build a partnership with a nursing home to assist the elderly residents of Mt. Macrina Manor located in Uniontown Pa. with a number of activities. The nursing and assistant living home has opened its doors to let the youth of Young Inspiration volunteer with the elderly. The interation between the students and the patients builds community development skills, creates a positive attitude, and enable the youth to respect the elderly. The students, as well as the elderly patients, are excited about the opportunity to bond weekly.

I have heard of an organization in Cincinnati called Little Brothers and Little Sisters. They visit the elderly and "adopt" one to be a companion to. You might call information in your city to locate a chapter.
