im sorry Mustang Gal, but TRUE breeders do not breed for PROFIT! period, i don't care how clean their "kennels" are.
i have been to clean kennels AND filthy ones, they are all the same, full of GREEDY people, who swear they love their dogs..when they are just using them as "cash cows!"
I've been a member of the ASPCA for 10yrs, and a volunteer with my local SPCA, and humane society, i have CLEANED UP puppy mills before! you can pretty it up and wrap a bow on it all you want...its still WRONG!
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PUPS DIE!

like ive posted before, i HAVE seen and helped shut down puppy mills in my area for the last 10yrs. and the problem is bigger than you think. have you gotten down the crap and taken pups/dogs out of one of these places again and again? well i HAVE. and as soon as you shut on down, another one opens!
the puppy mill industry grosses close to 12 billion dollars on dogs nation wide every YEAR! and that is NOT exageration or lies. supply meets demand! if ppl would stop buying from pet stores...the demand would decrease and the puppy mills would soon shrink, loose money and end up bankrupt!
mass breeding (in ANY condition, healthy or not) is wrong! and there are more pruebreed dogs in the shelter system than mutts, BECAUSE of overpopulation from not having your pet fixed, owner ignorance, and greedy puppy mill breeders.
i see more pruebreed dogs than another in the shelters ive worked in over the last 10yrs. ignore it all you want..puppymills are a huge problem in this country!!!!!

They come from dirty, disgusting, overcrowded puppy mills that need to be shut down. And the pet stores that keep them in little tiny cages, with no room to exercise, socialize or even go to the bathroom in a separate place should also be shut down. These dogs are OFTEN sick, have issues due to lack of socializing, taken away from mom too soon, second rate vet care, and people trying to make easy money by inbreeding. Here (Upstate NY) there are boycotts on pet stores that sell these poor little things. Many have closed due to lack of business, however, some still make it, because well meaning people go in, see a "cute" puppy, do not reserch, and buy on impulse. Usually these poeple are headed for heartache, financial strain due to vet costs, and have their hearts broken. If people want to spend that kind of money on a dog-they need to find a reputable breeder, with references, and make sure they are getting a quality dog, raised in a loving enviorment. It's so sad. I refuse to go into these places, cuz I get so pissed off at the conditions. We need more support to make this better!!!!!!!!! And we need to promote adopting a shelter dog, or a pup that has no "pedigree" There are so many dogs that need homes and love.

Telling people to stay away from pet stores and byb is far from "show " people propaganda. Also being usda licensed means absolutely nothing other then the person cranks out so many puppies that they MUST be licensed..the same goes for AKC inspected..AKC inspects when there are too many litters being produced by one breeder, paperwork is questionable, there has been complaints etc. There are "show" breeders & then there are "show" breeders. Just because someone shows doesn't mean they are responsible breeders. Pet puppies from a responsible show breeder don't cost any more then does the illbred pet store or byb puppy and in a lot of cases they cost less. Buying from a responsible breeder reduces the risk of health and temperament issues since these breeders don't just do simple vet exams but do health testing as well;;; OFA/PennHip on elbows & hips, CERF/PRA on eyes, cardio, thyroid and any other tests pertinant to theri particualr breed...on every dog BEFORE breeding. They also carefully study every pedigree for health, longevity, temperament as well as breed standard, they find the best possible mate for each dog,They usually have a waiting list of potential buyers BEFORE the dogs are even mated. They sell EVERY pet puppy on a limited registration and spayneuter contract. They stay in touch with the buyers and they will take back or help rehome any puppy/dog produced by them for the life of that dog regardless of age or reason.
A responsible breeder doesn't make a profit, they are lucky to break even..any money they get is put right back into the dogs. Their dogs are family members and pets and are raised as such.
We have clients too that are breeders, however there are several that I would NOT ever recommend anyone buy a puppy from.Sure thery get vet exams, vaccinations buy supplies etc from us,however they are still missing pieces from the breeding puzzle and are still irresponsible.
Vaccinations among responsible breeders..many don't believe in over vaccination , especially in light of all the studies that have been done and the AVMA new recommendations/guidelines.A good responsible breeder keeps up with the studies as it pertains to health, nutrition, etc. They want to produce the healthiest puppies possible. They also keep up on genetics. Some breeders do line breed (and no it isn't inbreeding in the sense some people like to put it, they don't breed mother/son, father daughter), but they do so very carefully and only after very careful study of the pedigrees and what is there healthwise. They don't go off willy-nilly and haphazzard breed anything that comes along. Most breeders however don't line breed or do it very rarely. The illbred, unhealthy specimans that people see out there for purebreds aren't from real responsible breeders.BYB and other irresponsible breeders are what gives many purebreds a bad rep. People need to become educated and stop buying from these hyped up sales pitches..it is the only way to stop irresponsible breeding.

Mustang Gal needs help!!!!!!!! Any breeder that spends good money on the dogs they have and on getting good puppies from them, would never sell to a pet store!!!! It just does not make sense financially!!!!!!! If I can sell my puppies for $2,000 myself, why would I sell them to a pet store for $200. I wouldn't. I would sell them to a pet store if I did the bare minimum and needed to get them out so I could have some more!!!
Isn't it funny how the pet store puppies have parents that were never cleared by OFA or any other health registries???? Why do you think that is??????????
And "show" breeders do not all "inbreed". And inbreeding is totally different from "linebreeding". And the puppy mills do that too. They do not care who the parents are, just as long as puppies are produced!!!!!!!!!! Showing your dogs at shows is the way to determine the quality of the breeding stock. It benefits the breed. The only reason to breed is to improve the breed. If you are breeding just to get puppies to sell, you are not helping the breed. If a good breeder could produce 2 puppies in a litter that were what they want, there would be no need for more puppies. There will always be pet quality puppies in every litter and those are what go to pet homes and are more affordable. They are not the reason to have the litter!!!!!!!!
And anyone thinking USDA oversees these "kennels" is sadly mistaken!!!!!!!! They do not have time for that!!!! And if a breeder has to get a USDA licsence, there is something wrong. That is a sign of mass production of puppies, or selling them to pet stores..or both!!!!!! Show/hobby kennels do not need a USDA licsence!!!
You see, you do not know if a commercial breeder is inbreeding or not, because they are able to "make" the AKC papers "fit" what they need!!!!! There is no way to prove parentage in a commercial facitity!!!!!!!!!!!!! You would be a total idiot to think they never do it!!!!!!

I know of puppy mills, they break my heart. There is this one near where I live, I know the family fairly well and have been to the kennels on occasion and this family has became very rich off the suffering of these poor dogs.
And yes I can say poor dogs, they are kept in small cages or little runs, they are overcrowded and the bitches are bred everytime they come into heat. Damn near every breed known is in this one particular kennel.
I would never buy a puppy from them or their pet store or any pet store.
I have bred and raised Doberman Pinschers and German Sheppherds, these mommy dogs were my pets and awsome examples of their breeds, a lot of research went into selecting a stud for these litters. The puppies were well taken care of and sold to screened customers. I didn't do it for the $$, I did it for the love of the breed and try my hand at the whole puppy thing. I would breed a future dog under the same guide lines, but I wouldn't take it on lightly.
And when it comes time for me to purchase a puppy for me, I will go to professional breeders who specialize in one or a few breeds. More than likely someone who was involved with Shutzhund (sp?) training and titles.
I don't have anything against pound animals, it just breaks my heart to go to the pound, the one closest to me is a kill shelter.
I know this may sound odd, but I only like pure bred dogs and the dog who resides with me has to show extreme intelligence and be obedient, you know what a breed has in their make-up, so you know what to expect from a puppy of that breed.
May all of the animals in the world be Blessed and suffer no pain.

So actually this is not a question. you are saying even breeders are ignorant and in it for the money. Some breeders let me inform you, breed their winning champion dog to get their next one from the same bloodlines. They are not breeding 2 or 3 pairs of dogs. They are breeding one. Most of the puppies not chosen to show from that litter have good homes. I not only have a dog for competition, I also have a shelter animal. And pet store dogs are overpriced and come from puppie mills and I wouldn't get one from there.

Propaganda. Put out by people who would have you believe that the only people who should breed dogs should be people on the show circuits. If that were to become the case - the average person could never afford a pure breed dog. I realize that there are some very bad apples out there, but we have several commercial breeders (licensed by usda) that use our veterinary clinic. Their kennels are cleaner than alot of people's homes. They spend alot of money of veterinary care, supplies and good quality foods.
If you think about it from a financial stand point only - taking all emotion out of this emotionally charged subject - it doesn't make good sense not to take good care of your animals. Healthy animals produce healthy babies.
Most breeders I know are fanatical about vaccinations - they simply can't afford to get parvo or other infectious diseases in their kennel. They don't want sick puppies - you can't sell sick puppies!
On the subject on inbreeding - most show breeders do that - but they call it "line-breeding". I don't know of any commercial breeders that participate in the practice.

LOL! Don't post links to animal rights propaganda as a source to support your beliefs! MOST of the Ar 'facts' are lies and halftruths. Puppy mills are a VERY small percentage of commercial breeders. Most CBs try to take good care of their stock.
JEEZ - People here really need to wake up to the truth of the AR groups, their lies, and their agenda! For crying out loud, EDUCATE YOURSELVES! And stay away from the animal hating AR websites!
Mustang girl - The people putting out the propaganda do not believe show breeders should be breeding either. "one generation and out", thats what they say.

I would never ever buy a cute puppy from a pet store. I want to know if they have been wormed, needles, and what age they were talken from their mothers. I usually got to the breeder when they are only a couple week old choose him then pick him up at 8 weeks.

If you are looking for a pure bred dog, a pet store is the last place to go, I would suggest going to a reputable breeder. I am well aware of what goes on in pet stores and where they get most of their pups from.
